When to book US flights for July 2010?

My wife and I are planning a holiday to Las Vegas/San Francisco/LA for 16 nights (approx) in July this year and would appreciate advice on when to book flights.

I have been keeping an eye on prices over the past couple of weeks (Kayak etc and airlines sites) and they appear to be rising. Flights departing Edinburgh to LA, and returning San Francisco to Edinburgh, have increased £100+ per person in the past few days with a number of airlines (now currently £700 per person approx) across dates in July. Appreciate views on whether I should continue to wait to see if prices level out again or book as soon as possible before its goes even higher?

I realise deals may have been available for reservations further in advance but unfortunately we are only now in a position to book.

Due to work and other commitments, our entire trip must take place within July (though we are flexible on dates within July). I will book the internal flights and accommodation separately.

Grateful for any advice.

Thanks

B

HI

book now

give yourself a budget that you want to spend on tickets when you find that price buy them and don't look back.

June and July is one of the highest time to fly in USA

the summer in USA the prices always go up.

I would also price those flights out of London airports - no doubt the flights out of Edinburgh use smaller aircraft (I find the B757 to be rather uncomfortable for transatlantic). You could probably save a bit by shifting your vacation a few weeks - everybody under the sun wants to travel in June-July! Have you tried Aer Lingus - usually the cheapest along with Continental.

Had a wee look on the KLM website Burnie and was shocked at the prices. It is unfortunately peak season for travel with the schools being on holiday and prices may not drop too much. It seems to be much cheaper to travel at the very end of June and KLM have flights on 28/6 returning on 14/7 for £553pp. this was only in and out of LAX however and returning from SFO may well increase the cost. Maybe contacting KLM direct may help. Also try Travelpack.com as they have prices on the same dates for £531pp with Air France. Good luck with your booking. Jim

Hi,

I'd play with the dates a bit given your somewhat flexible schedule.. Overall July is one of mid-summer peak travel months in the US for domestic travel.

Another option is to break-up your ticket into two separate parts: 1) Your primary EDI or LON to (either) LAX or SFO and 2) A wholly domestic portion separately for your LAX-SFO-LAS needs.. There several carriers-- including a few discount carriers that fly between these cities..

Do remember that when you book separately you assume all connection risk, so I'd make sure you had a cushion between the two flights if you choose to fly onward the same day as you arrive from EDI.

Burnie further to my previous post I have checked expedia for the same dates and flights to LAX and returning from SFO are available for £488pp. Hope this helps. Flights are taking 20 hours each way but at a considerable saving. Jim

If you really must fly in July then go as early as possible, but bottom line its peak time = peak prices. How about going somewhere else this year and then SFO next year in non-peak times ? May or Sep can be very pleasant in SFO and LAS and the flight prices might be half what you are looking at now if you buy in a pre or post Xmas sale.

FWIW have you ever been to Las Vegas in July? Roasting doesn't even start to describe it, another reason for going when the temp wont be 100 Deg F at midnight (which is what it was when I was there in June one year (God only knows what it is in the daytime)

Finally, I'm not convinced you wouldn't get a better deal booking UK-LAS(with stopover)-SFO-UK rather than buying separately UK-LAS return and LAS-SFO return, also gives you a quicker trip back.

OP - I just sent you a PM with a sample itinerary July 6-28. If you must go in July, go with a good airline (avoid US carriers).

I'd suggest you try to fly well after our 4th of July Independence Day holiday as well. That's a very heavy travel weekend.

Agreed with joeintheuk, Las Vegas can get up to 115F in July! Every casino is air conditioned but it's pretty shocking to experience if you are from a cooler climate.

If you go with domestic carriers, try Virgin America, they fly between all 3 cities you are visiting.

Good luck!

Thanks for the replies - a lot of good stuff there.

Unfortunately work commitments mean we cannot leave until the evening of 30 June (and must be back before 2 August). As there are no evening flights then, we are into July. Realise how warm it will be but we are set on going the trip this summer.

I get the impression flights are now unlikely to come down much in cost for July. Frustrating as flights were available for dates in July for less than 600 GBP per person this time last week. A number of airlines hiked their prices at roughly the same time this week (Continental, Air Canada, US Airways for example), any idea why?

I am tending towards just booking now so I can start looking at firms dates for accommodation. My intention is to use someone like Southwest or Virgin for the US domestic flights during the trip.

Thanks

Burnie check out the US Airways site. They fly from GLA to Phillie and onwards across the states. £657pp return to LAX leaving on 11/7 returning on 27/7 giving you your 16 days. You will probably have to call them to return from SFO but its worth a go. Jim
