Round the World Flights-changing dates

We are about to book a Round the World ticket for Sept 2010- March 2011. The travel company has been very helpful but say that any changes to dates once we've paid, we have to contact the airline ourselves and incur charges of £22-55 per change. The original travel company I contacted seemed to have a better arrangement whereby any changes incur a fee of £30 per person, even if changing a few dates at a time. Obviously one date change could have a knock-on effect on the others, depending on how tightly scheduled a particular part of the trip was.

My questiona are: how likely is it that we would have to make changes and if it is likely are we better to go with the company which charges the one-off fee?

I would go with the one that looks like it will give you easiest access to changes.

On my trip I only made one change to move a departure forward due to the Tsunami so I left Thailand earlier. I just phoned in and made the change. Think it was $100 (Star Alliance in 04 - 05). In the overall cost of the trip is was marginal.

Apart from that I had no other drivers for changes.

Have a good trip!

PS I booked with Trailfinders in the end. Most helpful.

Yes, get a copy of the airline's rules on changes. In my experience, a change of several segments has always been seen as a single change to the ticket, but that could vary with the source of your ticket. Carry a copy of the change rules with you on your travels in case you need to make a change after the start of the trip. Also note that, in some cases, fees have been known to be different after the start of the trip.

Thank you both for your comments. Just after I posted my question, I spoke to an Australian friend who has done a lot of travelling and he has never had to change a flight. The travel agent has been so good, helpful and patient, I am going to stick with them. The tip on taking a copy of the cancellation rules is useful. I wouldn't have thought of that. And as you say, in the grand scheme of things, if we did have to change a flight, it is a small percentage of the cost of the holiday.

The change fees are dictated by the fare rules and they are quite specific. It should not vary from one agent to another. I suggest you understand how much it costs ahead of time so you know how to plan your changes. Usually, it costs the same amount of money to change one date or several dates at the same time (all count as one change). If you plan ahead of time when you make your changes, you can save additional change fees later.

The change fees are often related to the class of the ticket you buy as well. Economy, business and first might all have different fare rules. Of course, each actual product (RTW, Circle Fares) are different as well.

My daughter is currently on a round the world ticket, and so far we have changed 1 flight which cost 35.00GBP.

The only thing I would suggest is that every few weeks you check that the flights you are booked on are actually going.

So far 2 of the flights my daughter is booked on - 1 the time has been moved forward 12 hours, and the other the flight was moved forward by a day - this is nothing to do with booking agent, but the airlines new schedules.

If I didn't closely monitor flights for my daughter she would end up missing flights.

A good agent should monitor flights for you and alert you to changes, even if you are in the back of beyond.

I know that was part of my responsibilities when working for a large RTW specialist.
