best airlines/planes from NY to Europe?

We stuck with our FF line, Continental, (1st trip to Europe in 30+ years) but there must be better.

We were on a 757 to Barcelona. On the way home, had to refuel in Lisbon due to headwinds--learned these planes weren't intended for crossing the ocean! The seats were cramped, no better than on a short trip in the US.

Suggestions?

You might want to check CO's FF site and see who they partner with (they're now a part of the Star Alliance). Depending on the destination, there might be a partner airline that is acceptable to you available. This way, you would get the type of aircraft you prefer and still get your FF miles.

Larger aircraft will still have the same cramped seats - just more of them. The cabin may seem more spacious with a higher ceiling, but don't expect any more room in your seat. Northwest's trans-Atlantic 757s actually had a few inches more leg room because they had to remove seats to increase the range. Not sure what Delta has done with them now.

Choosing a larger aircraft may also mean a connection, as one of the reasons they fly the 757 TATL is to serve cities that don't have enough demand to support a 767, 777, or A330.

silly comment about 75's not intended for ocean crossings. hogwash. several airlines fly 757's across the pond many times a day....

Economy is economy pretty much anywhere in the world and regardless of flight length. The only economy class product I can think of that was better than the 31"-34" pitch that you normally get was on SQ A340-500s when on the ultralonghauls from SIN-LAX/EWR. It was 37" or 38" pitch as standard but only because weight restrictions meant they couldn't cram the cabin.

As for 757s...well they're very adept aircraft, crossing the Atlantic many times a day with a variety of carriers. There are much smaller aircraft making the journey each day, on the commercial side the smallest would be an Airbus A318 that BA fly.

The op has a point. I would never choose to fly a long distance in a 757 if there is an alternative. In a dual aisle plane there's more room to walk around and you don't feel as cramped, even if the pitch is about the same. The BA 747 flights we took last month from SFO were a lot more comfortable and had better entertainment than either the Continental or Delta flights we took to Europe the 2 years before.

The seats are the same so theoretically, one should get the same amount (or very similar) of room when in economy class. However, there is validity that a dual aisle plane might seem less claustrophobic to some.

One person's meat is another person's poison, perhaps?

I don't consider single aisle on longhaul cramped. In fact I'd take upper deck over main deck on the 747 everytime and actively strive to do so. Only a handful of rows, two lavs...should feel cramped but it doesn't. Concorde was fine too, even with the dinky overhead bins and tiny toilets...much smaller than a 757!
