The world's scariest airports

From a runway built on ice, to an airfield in the middle of a golf course, landing at these locales is not for the faint-hearted.

I have landed in Madeira several times and it is a very difficult. The cross winds are the main problem due to the position of the mountains. I always remember a particular difficult landing in bad weather. During the approach the inside window fell out. Luckily, there was another one on the outside as well!

This is a fantastic set of videos. Thanks for sharing. Some of the mountain airports in Europe are interesting, like Courchevel. Aspen can be interesting, as well. I kinda question inclusion of Gibraltor. The rock is fascinating, but if you're that far off the runway you have had bigger problems anyways.

I've seen the St Maarten vids before - but not the bit with the tourists running for cover as the sand swirls up and those guys holding onto the fence and enjoying the wake!

LOL

and the one in Saba....My god!!!!!

I wonder if the passengers were aware of the "tricky" landing beforehand, or if the pilot mentions it during the flight?

Hee hee! I am a big scaredy cat on 'take-offs' and 'landings' and it wasn't helped on a flight to Madeira.

On approach, we descended and seemed to slow down, almost to a stop!!!!.

As we swung around in preparation for landing, the pilot announced.............

'We are about to approach the runway. Those of you sat on the right hand side of the plane may be alarmed to see a large chunk of mountain getting very close.

Do not worry, I have done this many times before and have never hit it yet'

According to the OH, I stopped breathing and went grey!!

Ok it is for fun but only a couple are really scary-many major airports can be just as frightening in a cross wind.

I would certainly take out the old Bangkok airport , Don Muang, Gibralter and Barra.

Paro (Google) should be definitely on the list., my avatar was taken on the way there.
