Recommendations for Perth to UK premium ec or Sin-UK

Hi there, it's been 5 years since we went back to the UK and I was thinking of doing it again in 2013. I'd love my 70+ mum to go back whilst she can walk about and don't want to leave it too late. Problem is her health has deteriorated and I need to take that into account- so was thinking of premium economy to make it more comfortable, and we'll need stop overs.

Any thoughts or your experiences would be welcome. We did air asia premium Perth to LK but the disembarkation on the stairs with no air bridge was a disaster for mum so AA is out of the question.

Was thinking- economy Singapore Airlines (which we do every yr with no probs) stop over for a day or so on the first leg, then premium economy from SIN to the UK. Any London airport is OK. She could prob do the long haul section in premium. I thought this may reduce the PE cost down a wee bit too.

Appreciate your suggestions!

Sinagpore airlines does not have a Permium Economy section. I would suggest flying on one ticket with one airline as this will be cheaper than getting a separate ticket from Singapore to London on an airline that does.

If its any use Singapore Airlines does have extra legroom seats (rather more legroom than you will find in Premium economy) for $50 a sector that you can buy at the time of the booking. You can choose your seats before you buy the tickets to ensure that your seat choice will be abvailable. I think you'll be wanting to choose the extra legroom seats in the centre of the cabin away from the exit doors.

Mankster, these aren't emergency exit seats are they? If so they are probably not suitable for the lady in question.

I have just booked my 84 year old mother PER-DXB-BHX on Emirates, which she will cope with adequately.Last year she went PER-BKK-LHR with Thai, with a stopover in Bangkok. The stpover is ideal if you are escorting her,but may be difficult by herself.

Make sure you book a wheelchair for your mother, especially with all the stairs in PER.It makes the long walks in some of the large airports a little easier.

If you want premium economy,I think you have a choice of BA/Qantas,and perhaps Cathay Pacific..Needless to say,not available out of PER to first stopover.

No you can also find these seats in the centre of the aircraft (at least on the A380 that does this route eg Row 80), hence I suggested getting seats in the centre of the cabin rather than the exit row.

Air Asia (OZ, not AA is the obscure but correct designation for them... AA is American Airlines) is shortly terminating service to London so that solves that issue.

Thai (TG) and Singapore (SQ) are both decent. I'd keep Malaysia Airlines (MH as a third opion). All of them have decent flights on to PER from Bangkok, Singapore, and KL. The best stop-over though will likely be Singapore as the airport has the best access to the downtown area and there are some great deals for a stopover via the airline... deals that don't break your ticket.

Thank you everyone. The extra legroom in emergency aisles are out for us, but I guess if the A380 was an option then that would be good.

There are so many stairs at PER though I recently flew out of there 2 weeks ago and noticed some upgrades to the gates which meant an air bridge (if that's what they are called) to board the craft.

I think Singapore airlines will the backup plan as mum is familiar with them and their service is great and helpful, but I'll scan for early bird fares that might mean an upgrade is a little more reachable. Cheers!

modjo, the transit hotel in Terminal 3 at Changi is very nice and we found we had a wonderful sleep there (we had a very long layover on the way to the UK in 2009). Our room had 2 lovely wide twin beds (closer to double size than even say a king single, a great bathroom and it was very quiet. Plenty of places to eat close by too. Our second leg to the UK left at 9am (we'd arrived at Changi about 3pm the day before) and we actually felt quite good on arrival at Heathrow. I think the room cost us about $100 each (AUD that is, not Singapore $) and it was well worth it.

It might be worth breaking the long flight up a bit for your Mum - just a thought :-)

Thanks Marmalade- I was thinking of doing that and leaving the next day so mum can rest a bit. Definitely a longer stop over on the way back to Perth as we both LOVE Singapore!! The key will be to get a good rate on the fares, I recall when we did a family trip back to the UK in 2005 a few months after I booked the family's tickets (which were in advance) there were great deals on business class that were only a bit more expensive than our regular flights. Fingers crossed.

Thanks to all who have replied to my perthgirl posting- under which name I can't seem to log in presently!
