British airways - one part of my journey has been upgraded

Hi all

I fly to Lax on 3rd September from Heathrow and my itinerary on expedia there is the same flight but it's in premium economy with our seats assigned. It shows the same on British airways website too.

It won't let me change the seats that I have been assigned.

Very weird - there's two couples going on the same flight and there booking is the same but they don't have any seats assigned.

Anyone got any ideas why? The flight is no where near full

You cant tell if the flight is full from looking at seat maps. Probably it is if you have already been bumped up. Nice one :-)

With BA? Or a third party?

If with BA, they may well be overbooking, it could be full but they might sills ell another 10 or so seats. Or, perhaps the computer flipped a bit and you've been upgraded on a half-empty flight, Keep schtum :-)

You wouldn't have been operationally upgraded over a month out. My suspicion is that at the time you booked premium economy was cheaper than economy and so you were booked in that cabin without realizing it. It happens when the discounted economy seats are sold out but the premium economy ones aren't.

Did you pay the £30 to select a seat?

No I was going to choose my seat 24 hours before checking in.

I too would suspect it may be overbooking on BA's part. It's quite common.

Overbooking is common but to upgrade someone a month out is ludicrous. There may be people who cancel, rebook on other flights, misconnect, etc. that means that most upgrades don't take place until just a few hours before departure. With hundreds of BA flights under my belt as a BA Gold and Silver and a good few dozen upgrades amongst those I can say I've never been upgraded more than a few hours prior to online check-in.
