In coach meals are complimentary on transatlantic flights.

Non-alcoholic beverages are also complimentary in coach. Alcoholic beverages are available for purchase.

Meals are free. You'll get a hot dinner/lunch about 45 minutes after take off and a snack about an hour before landing. It's not salubrious, but it's edible and the food quality in economy has improved in the last 6 months or so.

Alcohol in economy has to be paid for. That's been the case on transatlantic (TATL) flights for years. On transpacific to Asia, there's an inconsistency, in that on flights on the pre merger United routes (where booze was free) booze is still free, whereas on the pm Continental routes (where you had to pay for booze) you still have to pay!!
