Another Great Idea to Get Around Charges for Luggage

Read this today in the paper, another attempt to do Mr O'Leary out of his hard earned cash.

...And here is how it works including a fine 'is it a bag/is it a coat' discussion with a Ryanair agent. She knows it's a bag, she is sure it is, she'll put her mortgage on it... then... BAM.. it's a coat!

I have to say he comes across as a bit of a smug tw**. Just put it on and go through. No need for the patronising comments/questions.

As a very regular low cost airline traveller, I routinely will have 3 to 4 kilos of heavy but less bulky items in jacket pockets. These are normally laptop power pack and cables, 4 books, camera plus spare batteries and anything else small and heavy.

It is a no brainer not to carry small heavy items in a jacket

Surely there's a safety issue here? If your wearing one of those hideous looking capes packed with 15 kg of luggage it would restrict your exit and that of fellow passengers if required to leave the aircraft in an emergency? Or am I missing something and your allowed to take it off onboard and stow in the locker? Kind of defeats the whole point of having a weight restriction then?

The cape would still be in the overhead locker in an emergency, however a very overweight person would potentially restrict exit. Are you suggesting they should not be allowed on board or put in the overhead locker ;)?
