Immigration Queues at JFK

I shall be ariving at JFK terminal 7 by BA next week. Can anyone please give me a rough idea of the length of time to expect to clear immigration. Arrival day is Thursday and arrival time 12.30 pm.

3 years ago in Terminal 8 it took over 2 hours and the congestion was incredible.

It's really impossible to give an accurate answer as it depends on what flights arrive when you do - there is anecdotal evidence that recent US budget cuts have led to increased waiting times so I would guess you are looking at 1 hr plus.

Although a friend of mine passed immigration in 20 minutes 2 weeks ago... Really a lottery it seems.

Unless you are on BA001 or BA003 which pre-clear immigration at Shannon it is indeed a lottery.

My son made a new best friend about four weeks ago when he spent 4 hours in the queue at JFK.

I did it in about 45-55 mins when we went last year but it does depend on how many flights arrive and in our case a few landed at the same time.

One time last year when I went through JFK, it took me about 45 minutes which was great. Two days later, a friend came through on the same flight, and he stood in line for 2 hours.

To echo the others it really is luck of the draw. I went through 2 weeks ago and I had no wait because I have Global Entry. But as I stood at the baggage claim carousel about 20 minutes later, about half of the people from my flight who actually had gone through full customs & immigration arrived at the baggage claim carousel. Whether they had US or other passports, though, I don't know.

____________

If they were at baggage claim they wouldn't have cleared customs yet.
