Name mistake change on flight ticket

Hello,

A friend of mine has booked a flight, only to discover the last 3 letters of her surname were missing from the booking confirmation. She doesn't know whether this was her mistake or the airline's. She is happy to pay to have her name changed (corrected), however the airline is saying they don't do name changes and she has to buy a whole new flight, and lose the £500 flight she originally purchased. They have really not been very helpful. Is there any travel ombudsman or other body to complain to? I just think it is so unreasonable not to allow people to pay to change the name on the ticket, especially when it does not involve a change in the person who is flying but just correcting a spelling mistake! Any ideas/advice would be appreciated.

Booking was done directly with the airline? Presumably she received a confirmation e-mail or equivalent as soon a she booked. What did it show? How long ago was the booking? What we do or do not consider "fair" may not be relevant. Airlines can be hard-nosed about such things.

Avianca. I hadn't heard of them before! She found it on lastminute.com

She found the flight on lastminute.com and booked it through them. When she got the email confirmation she noticed her surname had three letters missing. She booked it about a week ago and has been trying to resolve it with the airline ever since, but they don't want to know.

Maybe the passenger's name is quite long and all but the last 3 characters will fit in the entry field????

I'm with the above poster.....that suggests that the name exceeds the character field. This is the most likely explanation....happens all the time .

How many characters in the complete correct name that was submitted?

You may be worried for nothing.

Unfortunately her name is only 7 letters long! Thanks for the suggestion though :)

She has, of course, contacted lastminute.com, since they made the booking, right? Not sure the airline "doesn't want to know." The responsibility would seem to be with lastminute.com, not the airline. The name was misspelled from the start, and lastminute.com wouldn't make the change? Avianca is an international carrier based in Colombia and has been around for many, many years.

My wife ran into a similar situation when she booked a flight for her nephew in Brazil through a large Brazilian booking site, Decolar.com, and learned later her nephew's last name was different (long story). Decolar.com wouldn't change it without a fee equaling the flight cost. The airline (Webjet, no longer flying), said that if the reservation had been made directly with them they could have changed the name, but since it was made through a third party site, only that site could make the change. She ended up making a new reservation, with the airline, and paying again.
