We've always checked ours in unless we've actually used it ón the plane because baby has a seat.

We're still ón a baby seat and it fits inside a large ski hold all.

Checked in. You may be asked to take it to the special (and sporting) luggage dropoff. A booster will be fine in a bag or holdall - it's sometimes easier if it's clear what it is to save discussions about whether or not it's free luggage.
