EasyJet (not) Guaranteed Cabin Bag Size

Anyone else had this problem? Flew from Murcia to Gatwick yesterday afternoon. Our only hand luggage was well within the new guaranteed dimensions to keep in the cabin with you, but the two young ladies at Passport Control said they had to be put in the hold (not just ours). They wouldn't accept that easyJet guarantee the smaller size can stay with you, and became quite aggresive.

They tagged several bags to go into the hold, but once out on the tarmac we all took the tags off and had no problems boarding the plane with our bags. As it was the overhead lockers were half empty and the flight wasn't even full. Hopefully just a one off.

Passport Control? That's only on arrival at a destination? Do you mean Security, check-in or at pre-boarding?

Yes security - where you show your passports before boarding the plane.

Just had an interesting response from EJ - they are saying it's up to the boarding staff (not EJ) as to whether you can take their 'guaranteed' size cabin bags onto the plane! So their 'guarantee' is all a bit meaningless.

Weird comment from Easyjet as the boarding staff are contracted by Easyjet, though not directly employed by them. If they can't tell their ground handling contractors what policy to follow, there's something seriously wrong with the contract terms.

"Yes security - where you show your passports before boarding the plane."

I'm very confused. Security doesn't tag bags. Who exactly were you interacting with? The gate agent? The check-in desk? Someone else?

This is not good news. Bought a new case to suit EJ latest dimensions so I will be very upset if this happens.

I have a connection at the other end and I definitely do not want my very small case in the hold.

The new size options have been in place for a while. I'm sure if this was a general problem there would have been a lot more fuss by now. Sounds like the gate staff at Murcia (and that's who they are from Post #7) are over-zealous or just plain incompetent.

Security are the people who x-ray your hand baggage and run the metal detector. I've heard of situations where they have turned back items of hand baggage and sent the passengers to the check-in desk, but that would be because the bag is so big it won't fit through the x-ray machine, which would mean it was bigger than the maximum any airline permits, so not the case here.

Easyjet has no control over security staff, but should do over the gate staff as they work for their ground handling contractor. Maybe their Customer Service Department was confused if the OP said Security had told them the bag was too big?

More than that if a response from EJ corporate says its not guaranteed.
