How do extended stop overs work?

I'm researching into visiting Australia from the UK. And instead of spending 3 hours or so hanging around a stop off airport on the way and way back I'd like to spend 2-3 days exploring the cities there. This is out of interest, plus to break up the long journey. So how do you go about this and which websites are best for multi-city trips? I'm trying out Kayak, but I can't seem to get a permutation of just one stopover per journey. Whether its Uk to Dubai or Bangkok to Sydney, or Sydney-Bangkok or Dubai-Uk. I'm not stuck on these destinations, others would do, maybe I need to just jiggle with the days of the week chosen?....Also maybe round the world tickets could be an option, but I'm looking at a total of a month of travelling, then back to here and work.

I would start by research regular flight on Kayak. If you click on 'details' you can see where the flights transit.

I would then go to the airline website and book a multi-city flight. You can't book on Kayak in any case. You can also search "multi-city" in Kayak though.

I often do these long transits. There is generally no price difference.

I would also check out Trailfinders who are reputable specialists in these type of trips, they can advise on things such as which airlines provide free or reduced price hotels for stopovers, deals going , etc. These are one of the very very few third parties I'd trust my money with.

Another vote for Trailfinders.

You could also check Dial-A-Flight, like TF a reputable full service travel agent. That's the one my mother uses now and they've booked a 3 day stopover for her and partner in Hong Kong en route from London to New Zealand.

The key is to either work with the airlines direct or use a reputable full service travel agent, with whom you talk to and discuss the options, and usually have a dedicated rep you work with all the time.
