customs & border control check points on international fligh

on a flight with KLM departing JRO (Tanzania) to EWR (Newark NJ), with a layover in Amsterdam and then Detroit, when does one:

JRO --> AMS-->DTW-->EWR

1) clear immigration/border control

and

2) go through customs.

Passenger is US citizen.

It is booked straight through on KLM.

If Detroit, how long of a layover is recommended? Current routing is 2 hrs 25 mts layover in detroit.

Thanks for your help.

Not sure about AMS (I suspect no border/customs there), but entry into the US they will get their luggage and clear immigration and customs at DTW, before dropping luggage off again for flight to EWR.

AMS - transit only, no border clearance. DTW - full US immigration and customs. EWR - out the door, badda bing.

2:25 is probably okay at DTW but not a lot of leisure time.

As long as everything is on one ticket, the timing looks ok.
