Hi

Do you have an EU passport?

Yes, so long as it is issued by a European Union Member State and you leave the UK before it expires.

If you've got an EU passport it's not a problem. If you're an EAA citizen you can also travel on your National ID card.

Why not just renew it anyway. You still have plenty of time and the UKPA will add up to 9 month of unexpired time to your new passport anyway.

I also am a UK passport holder living in Europe and would never let my passport expire.

Just renew it now, takes about three weeks, and they add unused time to the new one.

Renewing a UK passport when you live outside the UK isn't so easy these days. I know; I've just done it. You can't just pop into the local consulate. It's all done via courier service now.

Since you will be in the UK anyway, consider doing it by same-day service while you are there (assuming you will be in a city that offers that service). I did it a couple of months ago. I live in Israel, and it would have cost me more to have my new passport delivered by courier than to renew it on the spot, even paying for super-fast same-day service, when I was in London. You need to book an appointment by phone three weeks in advance.

See here:

https://www.gov.uk/overseas-passports

You'll need to do a fair bit of digging around that site to see whether it's cheaper to do it from Spain or same-day service (if that's logistically possible) when you are in the UK.
