You don't want to hire a car in the US, possibly the most car based society in the world? Well, there's always taxis I guess!

You've not said where you're flying from either but a cursory search of airline websites and online TAs will surely show you the cheapest months to fly from wherever you are!

"Also best areas to stay please don't realy want to hire a car" - If you don't want to hire a car then your only real option is to stay in one of the Disney resorts and use the Disney transportation to/from the various theme parks.

If you want to avoid a stopover then BA fly direct to Orlando from Gatwick but it wont be the cheapest option.

It might be best to see a travel agent as there will be charter flights to Orlando/Sanford that could include airport to hotel transfers.

I wouldn't recommend that at all, it would be very inconvenient without one though it can be done but millions of British tourists manage it so why do you think you're special, if you see what I mean?

I suggest you post on the Orlando forum where you'll get plenty of advice including best areas and best time, to stay which is off topic for the air travel forum.

The "best" time of course is subjective. Did you mean best weather? Lowest prices? Fewest tourists?

Also worth knowing that a lot of hotels in the tourist areas , International drive etc do shuttle busses to the parks, If you get a hotel around pointe Orlando on I drive there are also plenty of bars, restaurants and kids activities within walking and much cheer than Disney.

I think you will find it more stressful not driving with 4 kids in tow.

Anyway you might want to look at a specialist Florida company like http://www.travelcitydirect.com/

Re post #7 - The OP is wanting to fly from LHR or Gatwick (Post 2 refers). They also want to fly in July so suggesting a September flight from Portland isn't much help.

Georgina you really need to decide when you want to travel before getting involved in anything else. Flights are cheaper out of school holidays. Non stop flights are more expensive than stopping ones. Once you do that then concentrate on the other stuff.

You don't necessarily need to drive in Orlando but it is easier. Without a car, where to stay will depend on what parks you intend to do. For Disney look at Lake Buena Vista or Kissimmee and for Universal look at International Drive.

The best thing you can do is a) Order yourself a Brit Guide to Orlando 2014 from Amazon (great guide book) and b) surf the Orlando forum as these questions have been asked a squillion times.
