There are no direct flights from MEL to VIE.
No direct flights. 1 stop flights include Korean Airways, Thai Airways, Qatar and Emirates. 2 stops include China Southern, Finnair, KLM, and BA. There are many other combinations of airlines with interline agreements available through travel agents such as opodo, expedia and ebookers.

I like Emirates, MEL-DXB direct on the A380, then the short flight DXB- VIE.
"There are many other combinations of airlines with interline agreements available through travel agents such as opodo, expedia and ebookers."
Oh please. Don't touch 3rd party online bookers, especially Opodo which has its own top question (top right hand side of this page) explaining why. There are numerous tales of woe from those who used 3rd party bookers and got bitten.
Look at this site, because it checks the GDS reservation systems without linking to potentially very dodgy bookers.
If you get flights on one airline, go to their website and book direct. If it's a multi-carrier itinerary, go to a reputable full service travel agent and ask them to book it. Don't touch online bookers.Edited: 23 February 2014, 07:52
Another economical option worth checking out would be to fly to London and catch a LCC from there to Vienna.
With so many competitors on the Melbourne -> London route, the fares are often more competitive than those to less well serviced destinations.
Norwegian, Easyjet, Air Berlin and Germanwings all fly from London to Vienna.
But only BA do it from Heathrow, so you'd need to make sure you leave enough time for transfer, or spend a night.
