US domestic flight checked bag prices

Me and two others are heading to USA in November 2014. We are taking 1 internal flight from San Francisco to San Diego. I've been told that when you're an international visitor you may not have to pay for checked bags? According to webjet it would be $60 for 2 bags.

Can anyone clarify this for me? We are looking at Delta Airlines because it's the cheapest at the moment and Southwest hasn't got prices that far ahead yet.

The only time you won't have to pay on a domestic flight is if it is on the same itinerary as your international flight. Once you buy a separate domestic ticket then domestic baggage rates apply to everyone!! Southwest Air is the only domestic airline that allows 2 free checked bags to anyone .

If you put all your flights on the same TICKET as your international flights (so the SFO-SAN flight on the same ticket as your Australia-US flights) you will get the same allowance as the first flight on your ticket, which is very likely to be at least one free checked bag.

If you put SFO-SAN on a separate ticket, you will be subject to the domestic bag policy of the airline. As mentioned above, Southwest allows two free bags.

If you book an individual flight make sure you book directly through the airline. Check the airline website for all costs and T&Cs - baggage allowances and costs are clearly listed. Most US airlines who charge for baggage charge $25USD for the first bag per person.
