Long Haul: Anyone happily survived a 15-hr flight in Coach??

Hi Everyone,

I'm thinking of taking a trip to Portugal in the Spring of 2015. I'd like to fly Premium Economy but tickets are more than double the cost of an Coach flight. Is P/E (additional 5 inches of space) really worth the $4,000 price tag or is flying Coach for 15 hours from San Francisco to Porto adequate? I suspect it would depend in the airline and configuration of the aircraft, but I thought I'd ask anyway.

Thank You,

DJS

p.s. I've read most of the travel tips and they are very helpful -:)

Ok, you can fly 15 hours in economy but you would be crazy to use airfast tickets.

Or any other company with Cheap or any variation of Cheap/Cheapo in their name!

Darline, you really should be far more concerned about using third party agents with a poor record than about spending 15 hours in economy.

Doing a quick search on Kayak, it looks like the least expensive flights are through American Airlines. So I went to their site. For your dates, it's $1297 - SFO-DFW-MAD-OPO.

I Like what Abs140 said about enjoying the freedom from work, stress and social media.

This is why I'm not keen on the idea of wifi on a plane (aside from questions about noise-- will people's phones and devices be going off constantly?)... to be away from it all, disconnecting, watching a movie or TV and no one bugging you as you're travelling to/from your holiday... this is really a precious thing in today's busy world, and whether it's 15 hours in economy or being pampered in first, it's something to remember. Would rather be in an economy seat watching crap TV and whiling away the hours than at my desk at work!

Funny how all the battle hardened Aussie flyers have jumped in on this post.

15 hours___easy peasy___just do it as nozzie said.

Que?

Flying is a bl00dy wonder. I can wake up in Melbourne (Australia) and go to bed (the same day) in San Francisco, how brilliant is that? Also 15 hours in economy on the way to SF is infinitely better than 8 hours at work!
