Ryndam repositioning cruise in Oct... anyone have thoughts?

Have not been on a repositioning cruise ever.... boring, fun.... exciting... Only been on one cruise before (Carnival Elation) last April, very fun.

Anyone have anything to fill us in about? I have searched through the posts... have not seen anything yet about repositioning.. do they still have entertainment?

I didn't know they catered to an older crowd (we are mid 30's) but, the reason we picked this cruise, is so we had no choice but to chill out, relax, sit in the piano bar, catch up on sleep and enjoy each others company.

I first cruised Holland America in my mid 30's. IMHO, you'll be fine.

Is this the Ryndam re-positioning next month, 4 day Vancouver - San Diego? If so, here's your roll call on CruiseCritic:

boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php…

LaffnVegas (Lisa) is a HAL boards regular, and I suspect a lot of fun to cruise with!

If you're at all inclined that way, the day after you embark (day you visit Victoria) , go to Team Trivia in the Crow's Nest Bar (sometimes held in the Ocean Bar). I suspect you'll find other 30somethings there.

Yes, they'll have entertainment after dinner. But I find HAL productions shows very high-schoolish. OTOH, comics, musicians and magicians are excellent. Go to the crew show - you won't be disappointed. (How these hard working people find time to rehearse is beyond me!)

Piano bar is a great idea. Often, sing-alongs develop, if the crowd on your cruise is inclined that way. The Crow's Nest is the only spot for after midnight music/dance. Sometimes it's hoppin', some cruises not at all.

There are more tables for 2 on Ryndam than on many ships. It may be a bit late to ask now, but why not have your TA try for one (if you haven't already asked!) Unfortunately (depending on your preferences) HAL is implementing "As You Wish" dining right AFTER your cruise on Ryndam. If you don't like your table assignment in the dining room, check out the Lido for dinner. Linen table cloths, waiters, rather than a standard buffet. However, I think you'll find the main dining room satisfactory, and a notch above Elation.

Pinnacle Grill is $30 per person, by reservation. If you're a steak lover, it may be worth it. If you're not into beef (like me) forget it.

There will be few to no poolside games - sometimes a ship building contest out of scavenged materials. The spa is run by the same company as aboard Elation - Steiner - so prices should be similar to what you've seen for massages, etc.

You can bring unlimited wine aboard all HAL ships, so stock up before boarding, if you like. You can drink it in your cabin, or if you'd like it served in the dining room, there's a $15 corkage charge. I've found if you let the sommelier taste the wine, and tip well, that charge may not show up on your account.

Sorry, but it's a different story for beer and liquor. Inevitably, you'll find threads on CruiseCritic about smuggling beer and booze. If you get caught, HAL will hold it for you to the end of your voyage.

Can't think of anything else - ask if you have specific questions. Enjoy your getaway!

Wow, that is a lot of info, thanks so much... I just read posts from laffnvegas(sorry if I forgot her name :)) on cruisecritic and I am happy to know she will be on my cruise, agreed, she seemed to be in the know.

We like to think we can go until 3 in the morning, but, enjoy having the evening to have a late dinner, stroll around the ship, do some window shopping, maybe listen to some light music in the lounge and hit the room to watch tv or a movie in bed... (we definatly have those one off crazy nights though that we go until4 AM dancing!!)

So, I can bring a couple of bottles of wine and not have to worry about having it confiscated, that is great, it is only a four day cruise, so, that should be plenty.

Thanks again :)

We've done the Ryndam repositioning cruise - but the other way (San Diego to Vancouver) - May of last year. While we love it - there are a few "cautions" I mention to others: it was very very very ROUGH. Many of the passengers and crew members were sick. The ship had to slow down and we were late coming into Vancouver - no big deal for us since we were staying in Vancouver, but I know many people were upset (we also liked getting the extra time of board). If you tend to be sea sick, I would be careful with this cruise, since we later learned that rough seas are pretty common on this repositioning cruise.

There is no a lot to do on the ship. But it was the most relaxing 4 days I've ever spent. Enjoyed doing "nothing".

The ship was beautiful - loved it. The staff was excellent, the food great. We love the library area (forget the name) with the coffee bar. enjoyed spending many hours sitting, reading and looking out at the ocean. Our weather was pretty cool (hopefully your will be better), but they passed on out wool blankets for those sitting on deck.

I had thought the passengers would be all 70 plus - to my amazement there were many families and kids.

We took a Royal Caribbean Repo cruise from San Diego to Vancouver, and had a blast! All the same amenities as a round trip cruise,, only the price is more affordable : )

Have a great time !

we are back.... I think the cruise would have been fun, but.... it was 12 ft waves the entire trip... ugh! I am off cruises for a while, the third day, after the pool pretty much emptied onto the buffet guys, and then had everyone on chaise lounges, slide almost too the windows from beside the pool.... the captain came on shortly thereafter and said the stabilizers were out.... ya think?

I had been sitting there thinking, all I see is sea.... all I see is sky.... then they had a couple really bad waves and the next thing I know, a couple of feet of water is floating by me from the pool, with Ketchup bottles, salt and pepper shakers, peoples food, plates etc... is floating past me..... we can't blame HAL I don't think, just luck of weather while we were on, but, yeesh.... cruise was not what we had hoped.

Well I can't believe we're meeting online and not onboard! We were sitting next to the same pool with the very same water splashing around our feet! What a trip - felt so bad for the crew especially when all the dishes went crashing and cleanup was non stop the whole three days after we left Victoria. Frankly we're done cruising for a while as well - think we'll try an all inclusive next holiday. Talked with many passengers who felt the captain should have advised the day before we arrived in sandiego that we would be late so they could change prearranged flights, etc. Many were writing head office with complaints. We found the ship somewhat boring and much preferred Royal Caribbean Vision of the Seas which we were on last christmas on the Mexico run. Not much on this ship as far as shopping or live entertainment. Small casino and never could get into one of those comfy chairs in the library - alas our three days in san diego were great and enjoyed that very much.
