Smoking

Please does anyone know the smoking policy on cruise ships - my husband and I are non-smokers. We are going on the Costa Concordia. I do so hope there is some restriction!

Firstly, I hope nothing in this post offends any smoker who reads it. I have a medical problem aggravated by smoke (not just cigarette smoke - fireplaces, candles, etc.) so am giving advice from that special viewpoint.

Unfortunately, given your preference, Sheila, Costa is liberal in allowing smoking. There is no smoking in the show lounges, and the restaurants. It's allowed everywhere else.

If you find your cabin is smoky from the previous occupant, cabin stewards on most lines have both sprays, and ionizers that can help neutralizer the odour.

However, I would pack in your luggage your own spray air neutralizer. There are personal ionizers which can be worn around your neck which help a great deal if you are faced with a smoky room. Here's an example on eBay:

Here is a more expensive version available from a U.K. seller:

I would also consider purchasing a compact ionizer/fan for your cabin. I never travel without one. It makes a world of difference!

I don't know the destinations you're visiting - are you departing from Barcelona or Rome? But, I'd also research if smoking is allowed on tour buses. If so, you may want to start lining up private excursions. To do so, you may want to join (or start) a roll call on the Cruise Critic boards, here:

I know in the U.K. you can't cancel a booked cruise and get your deposit back (unlike in North America). For future cruise bookings, here's a reference page on Cruise Critic which sets out each cruise line's smoking policies:

I'm the sort who plans for every disaster, and am not trying to alarm you. However, I'd expect more smoke than you'd like, and plan accordingly.
