Colon, panama. Going ashore?

Hi there, Is it possible to go ashore in Colon? I've read that you can get off the ship and look around the pier , Is that correc? We will be on the Zuiderdam doing the Panama Canal transit. Thanks,

If the ship stops there yes you can get off

They have a few shops in the port area & out front of the port building there is a supermarket

We bought coffee beans & sodas there at a very good price

Not too much else there you could walk up to McDonalds if you are missing it

;)

We were on a cruise that stopped in Gatun Lake. They made a whole day orf it with local eats and entertainment onshore, swimming in the lake, guided nature walks and best of all, a trip up to the Canal for a tour of how the mechanics work. We were very lucky as one side of the canal was dry for maintance work and we got an expanded lecture. Be sure to explore ashore every chance you get. You never know who you'll talk with or what you'll see. Have fun.

Luaulady - just had carpal tunnel surgery - so need to keep answers short.

Don't wander beyond the port enclosure.

Colon is the only port HAL crew have told me they consider too dangerous to leave the ship and wander. It the CREW thinks the port is tough......

Fannish is right. The cruise staff will let you know if there is something that you need to avoid. I recall a Med cruise where the cruise director warned us about what he called the 'scam du jour' so that we would know what to watch for at every port call. We saw the Palermo scam successfully operated on some of the other guests who lost their camera bag and everything inside.
