river cruises

We are planning our first river cruise and would like some input on how to choose a cruise line. And any other useful info for making a decision!

Hi Kathryn,

I can't help with recommendations, but while waiting for others to chime in here, I thought these articles might be of interest:

For great illumination on the subject get an appt for all parties making the trip with a river cruise specialist. You can find the names of ones in your zip code at uniworld.com. River cruises are like booking a hotel or an ocean cruise or buying a car. They all perform their function but vary in the delivery. Some folks love Carnival cruises and others don't think that is their kind of fun, find them on Oceania, Crystal or Regent instead for example. For one more bit of info look top by your screen name.

I did my first river cruise in 2010 - the Viking "Portraits of Southern France" cruise. I wasn't sure how good a fit a river cruise would be for me as I'm usually an independent traveler and not a big fan of tour groups. But, I loved this cruise. The itinerary was the best part - lots of small villages, great wine tastings in 3 different cities, small walking tours with wonderful audio mixed with plenty of time to explore on our own. The ship was great - not high luxury but clean, comfortable rooms and gracious common spaces with wonderful views. The French chef was terrific and all the food great with plenty of choices. The staff was simply fabulous. I liked this so much that I have booked another Viking cruise in 2012.

Ahhhhhh, another river cruise convert. You know if someone says, like you did, that they are not up for cruises I just ask them if they stay in hotels. As you know, once you've slept and had your breakfast it is time to leave your 'hotel' and select from a couple of different means (even by bikes) to explore the town at your doorstep.

So glad that you were pleased.

Thanks for your input re: river cruises. I identified in asmuch as I like traveling solo...I am not antisocial, but I do not "play well with others" haha. We are thinking of a river cruise that includes switzerland and travels more in a westerly direction. My major concern is the "stuffiness" of the boat and passengers...I like casual and roughing it. (although my husband disagrees LOL!)

River cruises start or end in Basel, Switzerland and do not cruise through the country. But pre or post cruise you can certainly visit Lucerne, Zurich and so forth. River cruises follow, well, the rivers. If you are on the Rhine then you travel north and south, although there is a nice itinerary (Legendary Rhine) that includes the beautiful Moselle river on which you can cruise west and east and then still include Basel.

What makes you think that river cruise guests will be "stuffy" Felicia? And what is your definition of stuffy?
