river cruise of Eastern Europe

Would love to visit Prague, Bratislava, Budapest...want a small upscale ship with some charm-not too high dollar!

Any recommendations?

I think most river cruises are more expensive than Ocean cruises

Not sure what you idea of "High dollar" is

Most start at $5000 + for that itinerary

Check AMAwaterways, Avalon, Tauck, Scenic tours, Vantage, uniworld

You may also look at their specials they may have some discounts on upcoming cruises

john - the river cruise companies all have web sites, some better then others, so you may want to start there. You'll be able to see the dates, itineraries, prices , staterooms and other important information. This may help you choose or eliminate certain lines.

You can also go to www.cruisecritic.com and under river cruises, you'll find many people with info on the various river cruise lines.

You can use a travel agent who has knowledge of the industry but it's good to have information and some understanding of the various cruise lines so you can zero in on what is the best choice for you.

Only you can determine what a "not to high dollar" means.

Good luck!

A few questions....do you want to go in 2012 or 2013? Are you a member of a club? You may get unadvertised discounts. Do you have access to a professional travel agent with river cruise knowledge? To solve this last question you can see a list and find one in your area if you go to uniworld.com. While travel agents do have to charge to issue air tickets these days they probably won't charge you for help with this booking. River cruises are NOT all alike so you can use some help with this.

CCC

when you ask "are you a member of a club" - what sort of club ? Does membership of certain clubs entitle you to a discount ?

I'm interested as I'm thinking about doing a river cruise next year but not the "usual" Danube one from Amsterdam to Budapest and vice versa.

To answer your question YES for the US and Canada. Can't speak to Australia. What rivers are you thinking of traveling Doug?

Well Doug you can cruise from Basel right down the Rhine to Amsterdam with a detour up the beautiful Moselle River OR your can start on the Rhine and then 'loop' around onto the Danube ending at Vienna or continuing on depending on how much time you have. You'll pick the cruise for the big cities that you know but hopefully your itinerary will include some places you don't know and those may delight you the most.

We have cruised with Uniworld and VIking River cruises. Both are very nice. They are always having specials, 2 for 1 or free air. On river cruises most of the excursions are free. They will occasionally have a special optional excursion that they charge extra for.
