River Cruise

We would like to do a river cruise in Europe. As this will probably be our one and only cruise, we would like some input as to which one gives you the most and is the most beautiful. I know that is very subjective but I am just trying to get an idea to get started with. We are thinking of using Viking but are open to any other suggestions. We don't know if we should do the Rhine or the Danube. Not interested in anything in France as we have travelled that country and Italy extensively. Have seen very little of the rest of Europe. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Just returned from a Danube cruise on Gate 1 Sound of Music (April 07-14) from Budapest to Regensburg.

We have been on several large ocean liners and one previous river cruise through Holland and Belgium.

Based on experience I would suggest you look into the offerings from Gate 1. The itinerary was very good, lots to see, excellent tour guides from the ship and at each destination on our route.

The Sound of Music is not a "fancy" ship as we have previously sailed on but we did receive value for money, The cabins are quite comfortable (we were in an A category) the food was very good, wine at dinner was good and plentiful, and the staff on the ship were excellent.

Given the opportunity we will be back on a Gate 1 river cruise.

Since this is a once and only trip do you want something special/memorable? Most folks who can afford a river cruise can afford to travel on a good one. Go to a good travel agent, perhaps a River Cruise Specialist. The cost of their services is already included into the price of your river cruise so you might as well have their expert advice and booking assistance. Find a list of specialists in your area at uniworld.com under Find An Agent. Alternately I know you have CAA there and they even have unadvertised Member Benefits (aka discounts) along with their expert advise and assistance. All river cruises are NOT alike, just like Carnival is not like Crystal. Be sure to get the one that suits you best. I prefer the Danube but this is a personal choice and the next person will say that the Rhine is the better of the two. If you can do two weeks then choose the European Jewels itinerary so that you get both.

We went on one river cruise on the Danube on AMA, and it was excellent. The guides did a great job, and I loved learning about the history of each country.

I like the idea of going to a river cruise specialist, and if you want to know more about river cruises or a particular itinerary, you can go to the sister site of TA, Cruise Critic.

Run, do not walk, to your travel agent and ask them to give you information on Tauck river cruises. This is an excellent company with beautiful boats and incredible tours. Everything is included, so you aren't nickled and dimed about extras. Viking may do all the advertising on TV (just as Carnival does for regular cruises), but it's not the only name out there. My husband and I did a river cruise on Tauck for our anniversary and it was truly a wonderful experience. Enjoy!

AMA Waterways is overall experience best for quality, food, service and price. If price is no object, go Tauck.

These are indeed two good companies. However uniworld.com is so concerned with the details that, unlike these other two, they build their own ships and hire/train all their own staff so that they can closely manage every detail to ensure that guests receive only the best possible experience.

If you're only doing one, then Blue Danube from Prague to Budapest is the best. Make sure to spend 2 additional days in both cities. We loved it so much, that we are doing the Rhine & Mosel in 2 weeks.

I couldn't agree more with Elizabeth P - RUN to Tauck - it may not be as well known as some of the bigger advertisers out there, but it's TOP quality in every respect and just about everything is included. The local guides are extremely knowledgeable, you are broken down into small groups for local ours, not with a hoard of people. The tour directors on board ship are well versed and professional. Tauck is adding 2 more ships for next year as well. We did their BLUE DANUBE 2 years ago and we can't wait to do another rivercruise. With Tauck, you never have to worry about quality (or quantity! they feed you very well!), or that you will miss the top sights. You aren't nickled and dimed and organization is top notch. Ships are beautiful (their new one, the Treasurers, is built to look same as their others, Jewel and Emerald, all are amazing). If anyone has any questions about Tauck, I'm happy to answer, and no I'm not a travel agent or employee!
