Updated community guidelines

Hi everyone,

Just in case anyone hasn't noticed yet, I just wanted to let you all know that we've posted some updates to the community guidelines. Our goal was to make the guidelines more concise and digestible – you’ll see more bullet points and clearer DOs and DON’Ts.

We also clarified some of the rules regarding self-promotion – most specifically, that it is OK for owners to use their business name as their screen name, and that it is OK for personal bloggers to include links to their blogs as a sign-off. This does NOT mean that commercial business owners can start posting links to their businesses – that’s still subject to the same guidelines as before – but we’re drawing a distinction between personal and commercial sites. If you see a questionable link in a post and aren't sure whether it's allowed, please report it using the "Report as inappropriate" link on the post, or get in touch with us using one of the "Contact us" links in the help center or on the guidelines.

One last thing. We added a call-out to journalists wanting to solicit TA members for research. We’re OK with it, as long as the the journalist clearly states their affiliation, does not post their contact info, and does not initiate private contact with a member.

We really hope these updates will clear up some points of confusion and make our community a more welcoming and helpful place. As always, thanks for being a part of it!

TA Dan, I have a question regarding businesses using their business name as a username.

The guidelines say the following:

>>>Screen names

* If you are an official representative of a hotel or destination marketing organization on TripAdvisor, you may choose a screen name to reflect the name of your organization. (In fact, destination-marketing organizations are required to do this.) This is not considered self-promotion. However, we prohibit the inclusion of commercial links or contact information in your screen name.<<<<

However, that doesn't seem to cover the B&B owner ( for example) who uses their B&B's name as their username. Is that acceptable? Is that not considered self promotion?

Hi;

"However, that doesn't seem to cover the B&B owner ( for example) who uses their B&B's name as their username. Is that acceptable?"

TA has answered prviously that it IS OK. An example of that would be user "HoutonBayLodge"

"Is that not considered self promotion?"

TA has said NO.

Best Regards

Dan, you still here?

Okay, so a personal blog link is okay. But if that blog carries paid advertising is that okay? You know, ads for restaurants, tours, whatever?

Thanks for the info :-)
