Detailed Hotel Reviews

How about a checkbox at the beginning of the review process that encourages a more detailed review and sets up a template which could be filled out in a short time by clicking ratings circles on a variety of features. Those that want to make more comments, can fill out description boxes next to the review circles. The next post (by myself) will be an example of what I mean:

I'm sure there can be more items to list... But these are a good start, and could quickly be checked off as per the current rating system. I would suggest that these items "appear" from a checkbox asking whether a user would want to make a "DETAILED CONTRIBUTION"

Also a ????? Rating would be appreciated for unknown entrys... either that, or eliminate the ratings from unchecked reviews.

I'd much rather read a detailed review that told me WHY things had a 5 star (or 1 star) rating.

I wouldn't even bother looking at something that looked like that review above.

Wow flintjarvis, I've got to give you credit for taking the time to think through and write up your ideas to improve the hotel reviews. I understand - at least I think this is what you're aiming at - that you feel if there were just "boxes" to check, that might encourage more members to fill out more information instead of just writing a couple of lines.

However, there are a couple of things that make me think this simply would not work.

One, my eyes got glazed over about halfway through your list. *60* items to check? Yikes!

Two, keep in mind that your list is very "American-centric". The items you have on your check list are typical of a mid range USA motel. I'm sure that people in many other countries would look at some of your items and wonder about them ... pool? gym? coffee quality? smoke free? TP quality? Wifi?

Three, TA accepts lodging reviews for many types of lodging that are not mid-range motels such as RV parks, hostels, cabins, B&Bs, campgrounds etc. To make a detailed list for each of these types of lodging would be far too complicated IMO. The current list is not perfect by any means and should IMO be expanded, but I really cannot see a camper doing a review about a campground and having to check off the many items that simply do not apply! (Furniture condition and comfort? ... Windows?)

*

I intensely dislike the "tweet-reviews" that have sprung up on TA in the last couple of years, as I feel for the most part they are worthless. However, if the alternative is to plow through a seemingly endless list of checkmarks, I'd vote to leave the review requirements as they are, which allows me as a reader to simply skip over the too-short reviews and concentrate on the more informative ones where people have taken the time to construct meaningful sentences :-)

I also would rather read a narrative even though they are bound to omit some items. After reading a few narratives, you get a sense of a place. Again, it's the why. Not everyone would complete the comments section and would just check the boxes.

Check box types of forms have their place, particularly as they cue people, however over time, in my experience, they evolve into narrative style which has more "personality" and "meaning" for the reader. Quantitative data (for example, tick boxes) has it's place, but I think that having the majority of information as qualitative (narrative experience) is much preferable as a review.

However, I'll be interested to see what others have to say.

Edit: good points half-Brit

I'm starting to get a knee-jerk reaction when I see the words "What more can I say?" in a short review. I even PMed a reviewer with a list of about 20 more things that they could have been included in a very short, vague review that included this vexing phrase.

How about a link to "review tips" on the review form, for those who want a little help with writing a more detailed review, or get stuck when confronted with the 200-character limit? The "review tips" page could include a list like the OP's of things that people may choose to include in their review. I see it as just a way to prompt the memory, really.

Half-Brit,

I agree with the points that you are making.

I think this template would be a good "crutch" to help jog the memory for more accurate and thourough responses.

If TA were to implement the long lists in the reviews, I'm thinking they may be best shown last in the review, probably with a second "more" button or call the button something different like "additional ratings".

Maybe the template options could be personalized per user preferences in the "Member Profile" or "Account" settings, and available to use on an individual's dashboard pop-up window.

For beginners, maybe there could be several template styles configured for the different types of properties, ie: "Campground, Hotel, Motel, Hostel, B&B, etc...".

Luckyfour,

I agree with your comments.

See my reply to Half-Brit for additional comments.

The extended reviews would probably work best at the end of the review, under an additional button choice (so that scrolling through the various reviews would not be hindered).
