How the ratings are arrived at

Los Cocos de Vichayito has two ratings from two reiews - the latest rating is 1 dot and the other rating is 4 dots but the overall rating is still 4 dots - how can this be??? If you take the average of these two ratings, the overall rating should be 2 or 3 dots at the most. Why is this not the case?

They are asking about the overall traveler rating, not the popularity index.

The traveler rating is not a simple average of the ratings in the reviews. It too is an algorithm. But from observation, I'm pretty sure each listing starts off with an average rating, like 3.5,even with no reviews. Each positive review moves the rating up a fraction of a point, each negative review pushes the number down a fraction of a point.

This helps prevent big changes in that rating, and prevents one review from having undue influence in the overall rating.

one review is yours and just made recently. its already ranked 3 out of 4 and probably will stay that way with the solo review for the 4th ranked property being average.

also I watch the restaurant ratings like an addict and changes wont happen same day. not even same week. but be patient the filter may kick in soon and that property may move to fourth.

You have to learn to read between the lines. How old were the reviews? A large variance is always a red flag. Disgruntled employee, the establishment rigging their ratings. If you just have two current ratings find another place.
