Restaurant Reviews in Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo, Mexico.

It says the restaurants are listed by popularity yet Number #1 of 24 and #16 of 24 have the same amount of stars (Green Dots). These two restaurants are the only two with a 4 1/2 out of five rating. Everything in betewn has less and some alot less.

Just curious. Why is this?

Hello NatyEdo, and thanks for the question.

These pages in our Help Center explain our various rating and ranking metrics:

tripadvisor.com/help/how_do_the_traveler_rat…

tripadvisor.com/help/how_does_the_popularity…

tripadvisor.com/help/how_do_traveler_ratings…

Hopefully that information will give you a better idea of why the Popularity Index and the Traveler Ratings don't necessarily correspond as you might expect.

Best regards,

Ok, I checked them out. Still doesn't make sence to me. We are talking about a Restaurant, not a hotel. #1 of 24 has not been open for even a year.

#16 of 24 has been open for 5 years.

Thanks for following up, NatyEdo. Sorry to hear that that information wasn't helpful.

TripAdvisor's Popularity Index is a one-of-a-kind index that dynamically ranks establishments worldwide based on the customer satisfaction rate of a given establishment. We have a proprietary algorithm for determining popularity that takes into account quantity and quality of TripAdvisor reviews, guidebook ratings and comments from all over the Web. The algorithm weights more recent information more heavily. For instance an article or a review from 2008 carries more weight than an article or review from 2000. Based on feedback, we feel that our formula is right on the mark for guiding travelers in making choices for their trips.

I'm afraid I can't give you any further details to explain why the particular restaurants that you mentioned are ranked as they are, but they are being correctly ranked in accordance with our Popularity Index.

Maybe this will help:

The popularity index does not measure the quality level of a restaurant - just how popular it is as measured by many different resources.

A high-quality place, like a 5-star restaurant maybe less popular than a 3-star restaurant more people go to the lesser place and feel they get a good value for their money.

It's kinda like being back in school - the smartest kid wasn't the more popular kid. The most popular kid has other qualities that people are attracted to than just being the best student.

As it is with the popularity index - the best restaurant in terms of quality is often not the most popular because there are other factors that people look besides quality of food.

I think newer restaurants often zoom to the upper levels of the list soon after opening if just because there is more 'buzz' about them in newspaper articles, etc.

Does that help? :)

I have only recently been watching this. Is there any way TA can check if Cantina Habanero has ever been rated #1, #2, #3, #4?

What is the highest it has ever been rated?

Ed,

Just stumbled on this thread… Cantina Habanero did rate #1 right after Christmas 2008. Things changed since Meanwhile you’ve got reviews from people that said they’ve had a great time but only gave you four dots. Other restaurants have less reviews but all five dots so they are ahead in the rating for sure. I wouldn’t worry that much, Cantina Habanero is well known among all TA PM forum readers.

I wonder how much influence the 'few word' Facebook imports have on these ratings? It should be zero, and the imports should be deleted.
