Problems getting listed as an attraction

Our business is a pottery-painting studio in Herefordshire, UK. We have applied several times to be listed on TA as an attraction, but each time the application is rejected on the grounds that the business "does not meet our submission guidelines". We have read the guidelines and our business meets all of the stated requirements, so we cannot understand the rejections.

Please can anyone help?

Hi and welcome to the forums!

If your business was rejected several times, it is unlikely that it was rejected by mistake. Tripadvisor only lists attractions that are of interest to tourists and that last a day or less.

Do you have a webpage for your business? Could you post the URL? Maybe we can spot the reason for the rejection looking at your site.

Thank you very much Silvia. Our business is definitely of interest to tourists, and many of our customers are visitors to the area. It's an activity which takes a day or less, and other pottery-painting studios like ours are listed on TA so we don't know why ours is rejected.

Our business website is www.glazydayz.co.uk . Very grateful for any feedback & suggestions on where we're going wrong.

It seems that TA has been adding more specific information about what can and cannot be listed. Have you seen these three articles?

Activities listing guidelines

tripadvisor.com/help/activities_lng_guidelin…

I see workshops listed there; I don't know if there are only certain types they're now listing.

Here it says that:

"The following business types can be listed as resources, but not attractions:

Temporary or short-term things to do (e.g., farmer's markets, flea markets)

Items solely on the web

Services such as classes or information services

Things to Do listing guidelines

tripadvisor.com/help/__things_to_do_guidelin…

and here workshops aren't listed:

Attractions listing guidelines

…custhelp.com/app/…attraction

Perhaps TA Staff didn't think it was of enough interest to tourists.

Thank you very much for your help, Luckyfour. We've read all of the guidelines you've pointed us to, and our business meets all of the requirements. The activity we offer is very definitely of interest to tourists & we'd be happy to demonstrate this. Is there a way to contact TA staff? We have tried phoning the number given for UK queries - 0800 0988 460 - but the calls are never answered.

Really grateful for everyone's help & advice.... :-)

You're welcome. No, there's no telephone support for this. As Silvia says, as your listing request has been denied several times, I'm not holding out much hope but you can see for yourself in more detail what they're looking for.

Thank you so much L4. Really grateful for your help.

If the criteria have changed, and businesses like ours who were formerly accepted are still listed, but we can't get listed, isn't that rather prejudicial?

We know & very much value that TA is a free resource, & we hugely appreciate the service & exposure that it offers to all its members & users. We are extremely thankful that TA exists! But especially as it is such a powerful resource now for attractions and visitors alike, we feel it should have consistent & non-prejudicial policies. How can we make ourselves heard to TA on this issue?

Very grateful for all advice & help :-)

I understand what you're saying. As the criteria tightens, gradually businesses who do not meet the current listing criteria are being removed from the site. An example are the tour companies....you can list/review day tours only but not multi-day tours. Once multi-day tour companies are identified, they're gradually getting removed or if they do both day tours and multi-day tours, the multi-day tour reviews are removed. This is how they've been leveling the playing field, so to speak.

TripAdvisor makes their decisions on what they want to list. While I understand that it's a huge benefit for most businesses on here, I don't have any suggestions about how to take it further as they've declined your requests.

Thank you L4. Naturally it's a disappointing outcome for us but it's helpful to know that TA is taking steps to level the playing field.

We do feel that the listing guidelines should be clarified, as our business meets all of the guidelines but has not been accepted for listing. This is bound to cause confusion and frustration. It certainly has in our case!

Thanks for your help & advice.

In my Post 3, I linked to information on what can/cannot be listed. If you want, where it says, "Was this answer helpful?" you can select No and give some feedback that perhaps they could give examples of the types of classes they accept (seems to be local day cooking classes, photo-tour classes lasting a few hours).
