Why is Australia a Destination subheading of South Pacific?

The Destination Listing of Australia under "South Pacific" is a geographic error. This becomes evident in the top level travel forum categories.

Tripadvisor uses top level Destination listings for other continents - Asia, Europe and Africa - why not Australia too, as a continent in its own right? I think this can be justified as its a continent as well as a country. (Moreover, to list Perth, capital of the state of Western Australia as in the South Pacific starts to be quite funny - Perth is around 3000 miles from the Pacific! The entire west coast of Australia borders the Indian Ocean in fact, and the east coast borders on the Tasman Sea and the Coral Sea (I checked this on Googlemaps!)

Has anyone else noticed this silly inaccuracy?

Yep. St Pierre and Miquelon, a collectivity of France (French flag, French language,) although situated in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, Canada, is located on the North America Forums, go figure:

As is the Caribbean - Barbados, Bermuda, Cuba, Curaçao, Trinidad and Tobago and on it goes.

Yep Kerry its been getting raised for all of the 8 years I have been on TA. Most of us have simply given up the neverending task of teaching geography to TA staffers !

Australia is also just a single country. Look at the Europe forums for comparison: tripadvisor.com.au/ListForums-g4-i11-Europe.…

I guess I thought TA deferred to the local tourism board in these types of decisions. It doesn't necessarily make geographical sense, but it must be at the behest of someone.

i.e. the Vatican is listed under Italy when it is a separate sovereign state. tripadvisor.com/ShowForum-g187793-i1891-Vati…

It's a TA issue that has been discussed many times previously. One thread here: tripadvisor.com.au/ShowTopic-g1-i12104-k2807…

TA_Sara had some words on it at that time.

At least the Vatican is in the same continent and within the borders of Italy!

Australia is not in the South Pacific at all technically - and nowhere near many of the listed small island groups like Tahiti! Perth is about 6,000 miles from Tahiti.

Australia is even an entire day ahead in timezones, from genuine South Pacific islands.

"timezones"

Irrelevant.

"the east coast borders on the Tasman Sea and the Coral Sea"

Which are both sections of the Pacific Ocean.

The only country with its own separate highest level forum is USA. US residents constitute 40% of TripAdvisor website traffic - last time I saw a figure quoted.

On what basis does ANY other country deserve its own highest level forum division?

Actually, at the risk of repeating myself, every continent (with the notable exception of Australia) already has a top level Destination forum (Asia, Europe, Africa, South America.) North America has three.

What about an Australasia forum comprising Oz and NZ?
