Honeymoon Advice Needed: Relaxing beach, but stuff to do...

My fiance and I are just starting to plan our honeymoon, and need some advice:

We want to stay at a nice hotel, on a beach, where there is ALSO stuff to do outside of the resort. We DON'T want to go to Hawaii, and we want to go somewhere the dollar is strong. But we're fine paying $500 per night or so.

Belize and Thailand are ideas we like. Bora Bora and Fiji seem beautiful, but we're worried we'll get bored. Jamaica or Costa Rica are too low-rent for us.

Any thoughts or good advice on other places we should consider?

We have not... are they on the Euro? If so, may be too expensive for us...

Australia the forgotten destination. The long flight turns people off, the stay will turn you on.

"In LA the sun shines most the time, and the feelings laid back." (Neil Diamond). Try OZ.

Hotels by the beach, wilderness at your doorstep, untamed emptiness or hussle and bussle with everything in between. We speak your language, your dollar rules, the people will blow you out.

Try explaining the night sky to your mates in California.

Aruba (and Bonaire and Curaco) have their own currency, the NA Florin, but the US dollar is widely accepted and most businesses post prices in both Florin and US$. The Florin's value seems more closely aligned with the US $, so the effective exchange rate is generally pretty good, although prices in generally will be a little high because it is an Island and everything has to be shipped in.

If you have at least 10 days for your honeymoon, I'd seriously consider the southern pacific, especially from your LA home. But, even from LA it will take almost 2 days travel each way (including a little 'recovery time') so if you only have a week or so, you might consider the Caribbean area. In the South Pacific, Australia certainly has plenty of potential adventures but Bora Bora is probably one of the most beautiful places on earth. If you stay some place like the Club Med on Bora Bora, you will have plenty of potential activities there.

Also, you might consider some of the resorts in Costa Rica for a different and very fun trip. If you want to see some pictures and trip reports from Costa Rica and Aruba, check my personal web site:

You don't mention the dates so note sure of the season but nice beachfront property is the El San Juan Hotel & Casino, Isla Verde Puerto Rico and also the Wyndham Rio Mar. Great beaches, yet close to lot's of night life, and things to do.

What month will you be travelling in? The weather will be a consideration.

Why not fly to Singapore ( beautiful clean city, fabulous stores to shop) for 2 days then head to Bali. Stay in Kuta beach area....in a quait bungalow...gorgeous flower gardens evrywhere, friendly people, fun markets. Hire a local to take a scooter ride to see rice fielfds, batik studios (I did. You may get bored for a week on Bora Bora, but visiting a couple of islands may be fun. Rangiora and Bora Bora are both unique and not like anything else I have seen. bBora Bora has many water sports as the whole island is "fenced in" by a reef and the lagoon is calm. There is also hiking and spas galore. If you start on Tahiti, there are cultural sites as well as beaches then fan out to another island. Fiji, I have never been to, but check on the political unrest which has been up and down in the last year. I think the best site for vacation safety is the British Foreign Commonwealth Office website. Cook islands are somewhat underdeveloped as an upscale destination but could be very interesting, secluded and fun for a honeymoon.
