What to try in the Carribean???

So far, our beach vacations have been in Costa Rica and mainly the Riviera Maya three times. What we love about RM is the mixture of culture (ruins), eco-parks like Xplorer, Xcaret and Xel-ha, and the friendly people. We have a 9 year old boy travelling with us so the travel must be child-friendly.à

We are wondering where we can try next, but there are so many places in the Carribean, we don't know what to try next. Any suggestions? Why are some of the islands more expensive than others (i.e. where is the extra money going in terms of value for the dollar?)

Look into the US Virgin Islands. Three islands are: St John, St Thomas and St Croix. All three offer beautiful caribbean waters and year round average temps in the 80's.

Of all three, St Croix is our favorite. Very laid back, family friendly and lots of locals and local culture and food. It is also probably the least expensive of the three and is not quite as touristy.

You have rain forests, great beaches, and fabulous topography there. Great island food and wonderful snorkeling and diving.

The cost difference: currency, economy + labor costs, whether former colony of the French, British, Dutch, distance, airline (if just one or several competing), if there are charter flights, etc. etc....

If you like history, sights, etc. Panama, Belize, Puerto Rico..

Best beaches: Caymans & Negril (Jamaica)

Relatively unspoilt: Grenada

The least chance of hurricanes: Aruba

The best value for money on great resorts or good hotels (Riu, Iberostar, Barcelo) Dominican Republic...

Turks & Caicos have some fabulous hotels, we often find real bargains, but it may be that the US Airways is a hub in Charlotte...

Check all family friendly resorts; some are Adults only..

Jamaica is one of the only developing countries with a treated drinking water system = not sick!

Negril in Jamaica has 4.5 miles of soft white sugar sand with crystal clear turquoise waters.

Check out West Jet they are the cheapest for flights.

Look into Belize. Similar features to the Riviera Maya but English speaking and not huge resorts. Very kid friendly. Accommodations for every budget. You can split it up and do part beach and part rainforest to get a very full experience with adventures and relaxation.
