Gate 1 Travel

Just returned from a trip to Vienna/Salzburg/Prague and booked it through Gate 1 Travel. We did not use one of their tours since we wanted to explore on our own. They were excellent. They worked with us on setting up our itinerary and were able to give us excellent rates for airfare/hotels/trains.

Now we are looking at taking one of their tours. Highly recommend.

Used gate1 for a trip to China (shanghai & Beijing) over thanksgiving and had a great experience. It was a super value. Last week I booked a Danube river cruise for April with gate1 (had a 2 for 1 deal last week...highly recommend you sign up for their weekly email notices).

Just returned from Costa Rica, having used Gate 1 for a ten-day fly & drive. Everything was great -- upgraded our hotels and we were not disappointed. Upgraded our vehicle also -- a little surprised that the Bego SUV we received had 65,000 miles on it and was pretty worn; however, it performed like a champ when we drove to and from Monteverde on really bad roads. Also disappointed that Adobe car rental required payment for THEIR insurance when we have been able to use our credit card insurance coverage for vehicles rented in Costa Rica from other agencies in the past. Overall, very pleased with Gate 1 trip.

Let me clarify-- we have never used Gate 1, but have heard good things. That said, do keep in mind that companies will occasionally spam forums, so single or infrequent posts on any topic may or may NOT be legit. Caveat emptor-- check various sources.

We have an 8-day Amalfi Coast fly & drive booked through Gate 1 for this March. This is our first encounter with the company. The price is great but the customer support is disappointing. Because of an airline change in our return flight we are leaving from Naples at 0640 so have to turn in our rental at about 0345. We have emailed twice and called once, asking for the location of the rental company and if they will be open so early. We are concerned about getting from there to the airport. One response was to just ask when we pick up the car, one promised to email the details the next day and the third request was totally ignored. Any suggestions for obtaining the info?

Hello Costa Rican traveler...

We are thinking of doing the same trip in June as our honeymoon. How did you feel about the "independent" travel vs. "escorted?" Did you feel safe? I'm although thinking we may upgrade our rooms, as you did.

I've used Gate1 before (Peru and Greece) and have really enjoyed them (never any issues).

Thanks for any recommendations you may have.

Our family of four (two teenagers) recently returned from a one-week Gate 1 Travel independent package trip to Paris and Rome. The price was fantastic and the trip went off without a hitch. The accommodations, although definitely off the beaten trap, were clean and safe. Our Paris hotel was in the 17th arrondissement, very close to a Metro station, and we had a 10-minute walk to the nearest Metro station in Rome. We paid less for the entire week than we would have just for airfare if we'd arranged it on our own.

Found this subject while looking for budget travel options. As a FYI, I found the trip-advisor forums after I did most of my traveling, so you won't see a lot of reviews by me, but you will see my posts on the Charleston, SC forum.

I took a Greek Island cruise/Athens tour with Gate 1 back in 2002. The hotel in Athens was safe and clean - more of a US Holiday Inn than say a Hilton. The cruise ship itself was older and from what I could gather from the other US tourists would be classified as a 3 star - they were somewhat upset. Since this was my first cruise, I knew no better and was content. It was clean. I solo'd in a room, which was very small - where I would have put my clothes had I not had the other twin bed, I do not know - but it worked for me. The pool was small, but it was too chilly anyway for me to put on my suit, so.....

We did not have 24/7 food. We had set meal times, with a buffet for breakfast/lunch and two dinner sittings. The food was decent and I had no problem getting my fill. The day tours of the ports were reasonable and I took them all.

The most important thing to me was that I had no problems with their picking me up at the airport, hotel, or getting me back to same. They also arranged a tour of Athens, which was good.

I'd definitely use them again.

I used Globus/Cosmos for a land tour of Portugal/Spain. The hotel rooms were similar - some better depending on the city. I'd use price to determine which company I would use again, as I found both to have fit my needs.
