International trip ideas for family w/teenagers this summer

We'd like to go somewhere fun with our teenaged boys this summer for a week over July 4th. Would prefer a destination outside of the US that can be a "learning vacation"-either sites of historical interest or scenery very different from the Southeastern US. I'm having trouble finding anywhere that we can get flights for the 4 of us from ATL or CLT for less than $5000-$6000. Any ideas of places we can go (we are open to anything safe) where we can possibly get airfares lower than that this summer from ATL or CLT? We've been to London, Madrid, Beijing, Singapore, Paris, Rome, Florence, Venice and Mexico in the last few years so don't want to repeat those. Other than those, we're open to anything safe, anywhere- just having a hard time coming up with cheap flights. Any ideas?

If you really want to keep costs down you could consider Quebec City and Montreal. You might be able to get a really low priced flight to a U.S. destination then rent a car (be sure it allows cross border travel) and drive into Quebec.

Just wondering if you've visited the southwest of the USA or even the west??

It can be a learning vacation INside the USA as these areas are VERY different from your region of the country!

It will be HOT but Native American areas around Phoenix and the Grand Canyon would certainly be interesting to visit.

1-Niagara Falls. Then walk the bridge to Canada.

2- Fly into LA. Visit Universal Studios’. Rent a convertible and drive up the PCH to SF. Stop at many of the wonderful sightseeing sights along the way.

Happy travels!

That's a great idea re Montreal and Quebec City. Haven't been to Montreal in years and the kids have never been. Any suggestions on best airport to fly into for driving to those locations?

Thanks for the ideas about the US destinations- I agree very different and beautiful, too! We have traveled a little bit out west with them- Grand Canyon, San Diego, LA, Pacific Northwest but are considering San Francisco area as the kids have never been. Any great ideas of something fun to do there that teen boys would like? Or any day trips using SF as a home base?

Took the kids to Niagara Falls a few years ago and had a great trip! They (and we!) loved those whirlpool jetboats- what fun!

Thanks everyone for the great ideas! Keep em coming- they are most appreciated!!
