Trading our Christmas Tree for some backpacks... where to?

Hi there! We're planning a trip during the busy travel season that is the last 2-3 weeks of December, returning home either New Year's day or the day following. Since travel around that time can be extremely tricky/pricey, and the winter season is another consideration, we're looking for some expert suggestions for our destination. We love adventure, and also love to do things on the cheap whenever we can. Here's our criteria:

- 2-3 week timeline

- We are on a budget (so Paris is out, c'est la vie!)

- Don't mind shelling out bulk of our money on the flight if it's super cheap once you get there

- Looking for warm weather/sun, but not necessarily a caribbean type of trip

- Happy to back pack (though not a requirement)

- Either mid or peak season in December

Our initial plan was to head to Peru - hike the ruins & the rainforest, hit the beach, explore the cities - but December looks like a really bad time for that. Next time Machu Picchu!

I know this is quite vague, but hey! That's why we're looking for some leads. Any ideas are appreciated. Thanks so much travelers!

I'll put out Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia as good choices. We spent Christmas there two years ago (technically, Christmas in Cambodia and New Year's in Vietnam) and while it is a busy travel time, the countries are primarily Buddhist so stores and restaurants stay open unlike predominantly Christian countries like you'll find in South/Central America. South East Asia is incredibly cheap to visit so although your flights will be expensive, you'll be able to save lots on food and hotels.

If your budget can't get you to SEA, then I'd suggest Central America before South America. It tends to be a bit cheaper (although it depends where you go) and you'll be able to find lots to see and do if you haven't been before. Nicaragua is great and we really enjoyed El Salvador (visited both at Christmas) but be prepared to forage for something to eat on Christmas Day as it's generally family time in those countries. Hotels may serve food but many of the smaller/cheaper places will not. And if you can, do stay through until New Year's Day as the New Year's Eve celebrations are tons of fun (consider ear plugs for the fireworks that will be going off everywhere).

Thanks so much Stang1sk! We explored Thailand a few years ago, so we're going to check out the Central America idea. Really appreciate the suggestion!
