Winter sun destination??

We are an older couple in the UK looking for a winter sun destination where we can rent a property from approx the middle of January to March. Cannot afford long haul, went to Mexico this Feb., scorching weather but too expensive to do year on year. Just went out to Torremolinos on the Costa del Sol for four days to see if this is a possible contender, but it was often chilly, windy, and wet, and has been like that all of March, with it looking like a wet start to April. Are thinking of the Canaries but someone said the weather in these Islands has been bad for the past couple of months.

Is this a vain hope or just a very bad year weather wise for these destinations which we believed were winter sun magnets??

Any ideas about other possible locations that would not be long haul from the UK?

Within Europe The Canaries are your best bet for warm weather.

A bit further afield Hurghada in Egypt or even Luxor.

Dubai is probably too expensive.

Although long haul. Langkawi in Malaysia can be cheap once there. We rent a one bed house for around £400 a month. Eating out can be really cheap, £2.00 to £4.00 buys a dinner.

Thanks, we have been to the Canaries in November but never after Xmas. Trouble is people are now reporting bad weather from January, am wondering if this is normal or just a fluke.

Love Egypt but worry about the safety issue, and would want to be somewhere that the grown up kids and grandkids can book cheap flights to in order to visit us and have a holiday, so long haul wouldn't suit for that reason as well.

Am wondering if one of the Canary Islands is more sheltered and warmer than the others?

Thanks for your help.

A couple suggestions potentially worth exploring.

The Rand has been suppressed against most world currencies the past 5 years or so, making South Africa quite affordable these days. Jan/Feb is summer time there so perhaps give a look see to destinations along the Garden Route or Cape.

If you don't mind the long flights to Asia, the mentioned Langkawi isn't a bad suggestion at all. I would also give Thailand and Vietnam a look-see as well for beach destinations within reach of Bangkok or Singapore - your likely first landing from a long flight from the UK. SE Asia is very affordable for mid to long-term holiday-making and downright cheap compared to Europe and Mexico. The key is being able to take the long flights from the UK.

I think this year has been colder than usual in the canaries. The problem is its winter. You can't depend on the weather even if this year has been unusual so might next year.

Yes, these destinations do tend to have the stormy weather from New Year onwards if it's going to happen. That is why package holidays are at either bargain prices or hotels close for these months,

Still warmer than the uk.

You can really only bank on Egypt as warm and dry mostly for this time of year.

If this was not the case then the rental prices would be higher than they are Jan-March.

Possibly Cape Verde as a medium haul destination. Or Malta or Madeira closer to home.
