Where to go in July or August in Asia?

Hi!

Already thinking about where to go during our summer holidays next year. We want to go back to Asia, that's for sure. Our first plan was to visit South-Korea, but after reading some more it seems that July and August are not the best months to visit this country. I read the topquestions on where to go in SE Asia during what time of year, but that doesn't include all Asian countries we're interested in. A few times, I did come across the fact that Indonesia might be a good destination during those months.

The countries we're most interested in are Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Japan, and South Korea. We've been to Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam before, and we travelled there from January to March, so with high temperatures and high humidity in some places. We like to avoid that a little, and we also don't want to be washed away by storms, although we don't mind if it rains at rather predictable times.

We're looking to travel around part of the country for 2 to 2,5 weeks. We enjoy nature, short hikes, national parks, interesting cities and towns, learning about new cultures, just seeing a whole new world. We would also like to have some time for relaxation, at a beach or lake for example.

Would Indonesia indeed be best suited for us, considering our time of travel (July or August, or possibly September) and the things we like to do? Or are any of the other countries I mentioned also an option? Many of them are quite large, so I could imagine that maybe some areas might be better in the summer months than others.

Thanks for your advice!

Hello Pebbeltje84

Nice to see that you're planning ahead.

Bare in mind that Indonesia is pretty much entirely in the tropical zone as well, like the Philippines. As such, the temperatures don't fluctuate that much and its usually quite warm (or hot). When people say its a good time to visit in the tropical zone places, this usually means 'dry' season when rain is less expected.

Because Indonesia covers such a large expanse and includes over 17,000 different islands, its difficult to assess if the entire country or specifically targeted parts like Sumatra, Java or Bali would be good to visit during August. You'd definitely need to do your research and find out based on the places you'd like to target. If you only have 2-2.5 weeks, you'd also probably want to limit youself to a couple of destinations. Like Bali, nearby islands like Flores and/or Komodo and then perhaps sneak onto Java Island to see a few things there if you can squeeze in the time. Bali in August should be fine. Here is a link to this question on the Bali forum that would be a good place to start your research.

Bali is also very accessible for international flights. Other areas of Indonesia, not nearly as much.

You also mention Japan and this is a popular place to visit during the summer months. Hokkaido island will be a nice option if you are more interested in countryside, hikes, etc. mixed in with some city. Just keep in mind that Japan is very expensive and can eat up a travellers funds very quickly. 2-2.5 weeks there is going to really cost you a lot of money, much more than destinations in SE Asia like Bali or others in Indonesia.

If you can arrange an open-jaw flight so that you could visit a place like Bali for 2 weeks than spend 3-4 days in Tokyo before flying back home to (Holland?).

Hope these thoughts are helpful. Good luck with your prospecting out destinations and hope you find a nice place for your holiday next summer.

Thanks for your elaborate reply BradJill! Definitely helpful :)

I'll have a look around at the Bali/Indonesia forum to get some more ideas about that. Is it possible to still avoid the crowds on Bali during July/August? If we'd go visit some interesting places on Bali, will they be crowded with people or will it not be that bad?

How expensive (with regard to staying in 3 star hotels, transportation and prices in relatively cheap restaurants) would you say Japan is compared to for example the Netherlands or the US?

Again, best to research these destination specific questions directly on the Bali forum. Questions about crowd sizes are quite common on popular tourist destinations so you can just type 'crowds in August' in the Search Box on the Bali forum and you'll find much to read through from the local experts and past visitors. Here is one example I found...

With the recent depreciation of the Yen in respect to the Euro and USD, it is certainly cheaper now than it has been in the past five years or so. However, we have found Japan to be as expensive as anywhere else in the world. Also, Japan prices are high across the country, unlike the USA where you can find very expensive places like NYC and SF but also relatively inexpensive places, much of the rest of the country. Have not travelled around the Netherlands that much but would consider Amsterdam similar in terms of costs, perhaps 10-15% cheaper than Japan (before the recent drop in the Yen). Now, costs will probably seem very similar if you are converting Euro to Yen.

Hope this is helpful.
