Akademik Ioffe - Early bird or other discounts

Hi - A friend and I are thinking of doing a 'Crossing the Antarctic Circle' trip in the 2015/16 season, and are seriously considering Akademik Ioffe in January 2016. At the moment, the exact dates are not out yet, and so we are being offered a 5% discount on the assumption that the dates will remain unchanged. I just wanted to check if anyone knows whether there are usually any early bird (or any other discounts) on Ioffe/Vavilov *after* the dates are announced? In the latter case, we better wait. The 5% discount apparently expires once the dates are announced. Quite weird to be honest.

There seems to be different discounts being offered at different times and like airlines its about getting spots filled. we only booked this year for our trip on the Ioffe in December and they had two offers - $700 off per person. Or airfares to/from BA plus accm in Ushuaia free. They also offer a 5% discount if trip paid in full immediately on booking. But you can only have one offer. Not all.

The disadvantage to leaving things is that your cabin choice may book out (many last minute offers usually have little choice of cabin), or the trip may full up. If you want to do any trip extras such as kayaking we found these do book up fast so it would be advisable to confirm that. It may also be that there may be no further offers, We have paid up, chosen our cabins and can now look forward to our trip. If anyone gets a better or worse deal then thats just the way it is, but we are booked and excited.

Its over to you whether you want to risk any better deal, but the risk is getting a worse deal, or missing out.

Not weird. Fairly standard. These are expensive trips and the companies want to lock people in as soon as possible. Many people plan several years ahead, like yourself.

What if you saw an offer for the same trip in 2015, but with 10% discount? Would you wait a year before going?

Our party is booked on the Ioffe for Jan 15. Not many discounts, but one they did offer was if we paid 50% of the fee within the first month of booking they would have discounted us an additional 5%. Not sure if this helps :)

They are also two of the smallest ships down there these days. Less passengers means they sell out a lot faster. They are very popular with the purests who prefer a proper expedition over the more luxury style ships. They have a high repeat passenger list. I know several ladies who do the Ipffe twice a year for many years now.

My wife and I completed a trip on this vessel from the 9th Jan 2015 to the 21st Jan. It was fantastic & the boat is the only one you should consider.... JUST BOOK & GO !!!!!

Cheers

Hope you can start a thread with a trip report Paul - that would be great to add to the list on the right of screen.
