A little more detail Neisar :-)

Where does he want to travel to, budget, what type of 'art'? Watercolour, oil, sculpture, sketching?

What are you looking for that you haven't been able to find on the net?

True.

He is into sketching and I believe painting but not exactly sure what type.

The main issue is him, he is very shy and slightly negative about life in general and since his divorce has hidden away from the world. He isn't overly flush with money either.

So ideally I would like to find him somewhere that isn;t too expensive where maybe he can meet like minded people and start to make friends....or converse at the very least! Seen plenty on the net, but hoped maybe people may have been on some that would be more suited to his situation. I also wondered about volunteer breaks, painting canal boats and the such like

About a self art-appreciation trip to Rome and Florence. Endless miles of museum, gallery and church halls, rooms, naves and chapels to admire. Just a thought.

Does he want to travel abroad or remain in the UK ?

If he wants to stay in the UK, a thought.... most of the big UK museums/galleries will be mounting summer exhibitions/guided tours/art classes and lectures, some of which are free! St.Ives has an extention of the Tate, and here in sunny Kent ( joke!!) the new Turner contemporary will be bringing out their summer programme.

Some of the universities run summer programmes using both the halls of residence and the uni faclities for a vast range of educational/recreational activities, and are very affordable and have excellent facilities.

The Royal Academy of Art ( on their website) may also advertise breaks for art studies and painting holidays.

Abroad....? I'm sure there are specialist holiday companies offering art study/appreciation tours, but without a specific destination in mind, it will be difficult to offer suggestions.

Volunteer breaks sounds like a better way of getting chatting to people. The National Parks do these and they should be a reasonable price. nationalparks.gov.uk/lookingafter/jobscareer…

or if you are looking abroad do a search for 'national parks volunteering vacations'.

Walking holidays is a gentle way to get chatting too. They do these in places like the Mediterranian Islands. Solos Holidays do some of these but it may be best to stick to a more general one where he doesn't feel pressured

I like BradJills idea. Unless you think he may just go off on his own! If it was a group hol he could get his own space when he liked. There should be some for Liverpool, Glasgow, London. there is St Ives which was the home of many artists & still is....or Barcelona is quite reasonable and has quite a bit.

I checked on the ones that used to run here as that would be perfect for own space v companionship but they seem to have stopped. Credit crunch has affected a lot round here.

If your friend is still looking for a suitable holiday, there are several options with 'Paint Paleochora' in South West Crete. 3 day independent art course where you take your own accommodation, or there is a twice yearly residential art course with 7 nights accommodation and 5 days of painting. Have a look at the website www.paintpaleochora.com

Just came back from an art or painting holiday in Siem Reap Cambodia. An amazing holiday experience and one I won't forget!

10 days of tours food painting and relaxing in a lovely tropical climate was a wonderful. The feature artist, Craig Penny from Australia was an accomplished painter and just a terrific person to help guide us with techniques and subjects.

We stayed at the River Garden Hotel in Siem Reap and travelled to painting locations from there.

Not expensive like Europe and Australia great to see Angkor Wat and the temples and lovely group of painters made the holiday something special.

Check it out
