thailand, laos, cambodia and vietnam..help make it special

TA community, please help me make this trip special, I'm asking for guidance and genuine interest in making this trip meaningful, adventurous, spiritual, enlightening, cultural, relaxing, crazy and of course, full of memorable experiences with new friends/family.

I'm from NY, 31 single lady. I'm taking this trip because I really earned it. This past year, I lost everything, really everything. I lost my dad, my family, my house, my savings and my job. Even though I lost so much( but not my sanity) I gained far more, and I am thankful and appreciative of the experience, good and bad.

So, this trip is my finish line, for many reasons I won't bore you with. The plan:

Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia, and considering 1-2 days in either singapore or hong kong depending on what airline and connection flight. Planning to leave from jfk on march 3-22, dates are flexible. I have ideas of where and what to see and do, but I can't decide, I want to do everything!

I really need help in planning this out. I'm outgoing and social but don't want to be alone..considering a tours.

Everything else is up for consideration. I don't need budget but also not a rockstar, clean comfy and safe!

I want to thank you for your time and effort

Well done finding some space for yourself after a difficult time.

A fantastic agency called Inside Japan has recently started a sister company called Inside Vietnam tours which, if it is anything like Inside Japan, should be terrific. I met some of the people running it at the UK Destinations exhibit and was impressed with them. They specialise in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos, both group tours and tailored trips so you could do either or combine them.

I have taken 3 solo trips to Japan organised by Inside Japan and found working with them a joy.

I don't do group tours, but the IJ tours get god reviews.

IMO, it certainly would be worth ringing the Vietnam "branch" to talk to them about your trip. The company was really good at tailoring trips for me that reflected my particular interests.

BTW, this summer my husband came with me to Japan for a 5 week trip that involved travelling together as well as two separate weeks of each travelling solo. My husband spend a week staying in a Buddhist monastery on Mount Koya (booked through Inside Japan) in what was essentially a mall private traditional apartment with a porch leading on to a garden. He found it a very peaceful and a very satisfying time.

Japan is obviously further north than southeast asia, but IME, it is superb for solo travel and incredibly safe. I find the sense of security is very relaxing, especially as a female.

If you have the time and money you might consider adding Japan to your itinerary.

I have travelled to all the countries on your wish list - but not in one trip!

I always fly via Bangkok and have a few days at the start and finish of my holiday there. I spent 3 weeks in Vietnam in December 2009, 3 weeks in Cambodia in 2011, and 2 weeks in Laos in 2012. I love Chiang Mai in the north of Thailand and added on 2 weeks there at the end of my Laos trip.

SE Asia is really easy to get around and whilst taking usual safety precautions, I always feel confident travelling alone.

I make all my own plans - using T/A extensively, and then book tours that I like the look of when in situ. Some are half and full day tours, and some like the Mekong Delta and Halong Bay in Vietnam were 3 day/2 night tours. You will find it easy to meet fellow travellers.

I have done reviews of all the accommodation I used which you will find by clicking on my username. I find that by staying in small owner/operated guest houses you meet more people than in large impersonal hotels.

With the limited time you have, I would advise you to read the individual forums and choose 2-3 destinations within one country. With a few days en-route in either HK or Singapore (I preferred HK) you've got the makings of a great trip.

Enjoy!

Trisha
