Personalised tours in SE Asia

Has anyone used Kensington tours for Cambodia and Vietnam recently? Or are there any other tour companies recommended for individualizing travel?

I must say that SEA is so easy to travel independant, without the need of an expensive tour agency. I wouldn't enjoy the restriction, and prefer to stay in a place I like a bit longer, and head off earlier from places I do not enjoy too much.

There are some very good sites like www.travelfish.org which provides great information about SEA, and what places to see. Maybe it is worthwhile to check it out.

If you want to pull up posts with this company, do a search. Type Kensington tours and vietnam or cambodia - into the search box at the top right of the page. Then click search. I saw several mentions, some old and some recent,

Thanks... yes, I checked the forums first, but there was only one this past year and I was hoping there would be more people who might have had recent experiences in Cambodia and Vietnam with this company.

Thanks....I don't like the idea of group travel, but do enjoy the convenience of having pre-arranged transport and private guides. This company seems to be able to customize your itinerary and can be flexible with the schedule if you want to stay longer in one place. Thanks for the other ideas!

The individual travel forums may contain information/recommendations for local guides/drivers, plus trip reports from other travellers.

In the past I've used recommended drivers for some of the destinations I'd been to. Admittedly, not all destination forums have recommended drivers/guides lists, but it's worth checking. You do have to do your own research though, into what you specifically want to see and do. The fee's go straight into the local economy too.

My favourite specialist travel company for tailored trips, Inside Japan, has now set up a sister company called Inside Vietnam that specialises in group tours (which I don't do) and tailored trips (which I sometimes do) for Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. If the new company is half as good as Inside Japan, it will be of great assistance.

insidevietnamtours.com/fully-tailored-journe…

I have no doubt that a good trip to Indo-China can be organised by the visitor with help only from guide books and the internet, but I too find it useful sometimes to have the details of transport, accommodation and the occasional guide sorted by an expert. I good company will know far more about the destination than I can learn in a short time and their suggestions and assistance can be very helpful, as can having an emergency local number to ring, especially for a solo traveller.

Inside Japan is very good at putting money into the local economy and I have no doubt that IV will do that too.
