America for a month

Hey there. I have so many questions to ask. I've trawled this site for similar questions and answers but felt it may be easier to ask my own.

I am 23, and wanting to go to America for a month from Sydney, Australia. My original intention for visiting the states was to go to Burning Man 2014, but after a long think about going to such a festival on my own I may reconsider. Burning Man 2014 is at the end of August, so was either considering going for the entire month of August with the festival at the end, or at the end of August, starting the trip with the festival and then travelling on for the month of September.

I will be wanting to see natural attractions, I'm a huge fan of any festivals, so if there are any music festivals on around that time please mention them and I will check them out!

I would like to go for 4-5 weeks. I'd like to know some main attractions, how much money I should try and save (I'm feeling around the $5k mark?) If its difficult to travel from the USA to Canada, and any other info or tips I should be aware of!

This will be my first OS trip. So I'm really excited!!

Any info will be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance :)

Anna.

The place to start is a good guidebook.

I like the Lonely Planet Guides for the background information and other specialist sections (including a month by month list of festivals), but others prefer the Rough Guides or others. You sound like you are going to a place you don't know much about, so acquiring some basic knowledge is where to begin.

Anna, also post your exact same question on one of the US forums. We have some people come on here who may be able to direct you to the best one if you wait. No point in putting it under the general country as it won't pull up enough answers.

The problem being that you don't know where you are going, just 2 massively huge countries so like Leagle says you need to narrow it down a bit. Do a bit of research on what you would like to see, how you would get from place to place.

My geography is useless so I looked at a map with your one definite pinned. Do that and locate the Burning man place. Then look around at nearby places, how to get to them. Then ask on the relevant forums for the best local knowledge

Hi,

I know a lot about Burning Man because my daughter used to go.

You really canNOT go there on your own without knowing some people!

It is in the middle of nowhere in the desert and you need transportation, water, food, costumes , all sorts of stuff to be safe and get into the "activities" at the festival.

My daughter had a whole Burning Man closet with her gear!!

It is not for the faint of heart or squeamish!

Hey there. I am aware of what happens there. My neighbours have been many times before and have informed me of everything that they experienced and witnessed whilst there.

I've tried asking my close group of friends if they'd be interested in going with me and none of them are really in to festivals at all, let alone an experience like burning man!

Cool. Thanks for that.

Can you recommend a local forum?

Can I assume you already know the web site and the Facebook page:

http://www.burningman.com/

I'd also plan on talking to folks on the San Francisco forum:
