You can pick up the sleeper in Preston. albeit at 1am. It makes a sensible choice for those in the north west if you can cope with the 1am departure. Mind you the return arriving at 4.36am is less sociable, even when like us you live less than 2 miles from the station.

The new Mk.5 carriages (that will also be used by Transpennine Express) are, at the moment, being constructed in Spain and tested in Czech Republic. They've even sent a class 73 loco from the UK to Czech Republic to do the testing.

What a bizarre way of doing things!

Hopefully, that will be when the new stock has entered service. The old carriages are creaking a bit now, they're over 30 years old and have been heavily used.

@response 1 ----- Personally I feel you actually miss out on half the experience though not by socialising and relaxing in the (all be it slightly dated) dining car before heading off to bed later in the evening ...

When you consider its only 2 hrs down to London from Manchester and you can get a full day either exploring or at a matinee
