Train travel through the UK

I will hopefully be visiting the UK for a month in September and was hoping to get some ideas about train travel.

This is my vague course of action

London - Chichester - train

Chichester - Exeter

Exeter - Truro

Truro - Barnstaple

Barnstaple - Windermere

Windermere - Glasgow

Glasgow - Ayr

Ayr - Fort William

Fort William - Mallaig

Mallaig - Isle of Skye

Isle of Skye - Inverness

Inverness - Edingburgh

I am also looking at a few other rail options.

I really do want to travel on the Jacobite so that is a definite must

I was looking at the Dorset Express on the 6th of Sept

I was also looking at West Highland from the 9-12 which I believe shows views of where the Jacobite travels

I was going to throw all my plans out the window and go like this

Arrive in the UK

Evan Evans tour of Winchester, Salisbury and Bath

Go to Chichester for a couple of days

Come back and for the West Highlander

on the 12th when it return, hire a car, do some driving and end up in Ayr eventually.

From there continue the travel as planned

Any ideas or suggestions for train travel?

If you are building your holiday around steam specials, be aware that they are never fully confirmed until quite close to the trip date and they can and do get cancelled. If you haven't already look at railwayherald.com for tour listings and updates.

If you want to travel by rail then why do a coach tour - if you went by train to Bath you could stop off at places like Didcot Railway Centre.

You seem to like trains, so how about visiting the national rail museum in York (great city too)?
