http://en.voyages-sncf.com/en/ is the site for train schedules in France. If you put in Antarctic for your country it will not switch you to Rail Europe. Train Tickets for the fast trains can be bought and printed 3 months ahead for the lowest prices, and some trains as much as 6 months ahead. A ticket from Nice to Vintimille can be bought at the Nice train station. To see the schedule go to the link above and put in a date within the next week for local trains and you will see trains are every 30 minutes and costs 7:30 euros for the 48 minute ride.

For Italian train tickets go to www.trenitalia.com and switch to English by clicking the British flag then put in the Italian name putting in Ventimiglia to Como S Giovanni and a date about 4 months or less before travel for the lowest prices. Follow the directions to purchase and print your tickets which you see is about 5 hours and starts at 13.55 euros total which includes your seat reservations which are required if it is a fast train and not a local train like Nice to Vintimille.

Always inform your credit card company before making foreign purchases.

This site for Italian train travel may also help. We only speak a few phrases in Italian and did fine traveling by train in Italy.

Also go to www.seat61.com for more train info but avoid Eurail and Rail Europe links for most complete schedules and pricing.

If you check the timetable at Trenitalia, you can choose the connection with the least train changes. Normally you would change and wait at Milano Centrale (probably about 15 to 20 minutes), which is a very large station.

You can familiarise yourself with the station here:

http://www.milanocentrale.it/en/

If you choose the buy the tickets locally, all ticket machines can be switched to English language, no problems at all.

If by 'Como' you mean the lake rather than the city, you could be better off going to Varenna-Esino station rather than to Como S. Giovanni. Varenna-Esino is the station for beautiful Varenna, which is connected by short ferry journeys to Bellagio and Menaggio across the lake.

Ventimiglia to Milano Centrale is a 4 hour train trip with no train changes. That route does not sell out of the 9 euro super economy 2nd class fares as fast as other more popular routes in Italy, but I put in a date the end of September and I noticed the 19 euro super economy fares for 1st class are selling out. Most people will tell you except for the little extra room in 1st class that 2nd class is just as nice and gets you to the same place. You must change trains in Milano Centrale whether you decide to go to Como and take the scenic slow boat to the lovely town of Varenna on Lake Como go direct to Varenna by train. Purchase your ticket Ventimiglia to Milano Centrale 4 months ahead or whenever you are sure of the day and time you will be heading to Milan. The regional trains from Milan do not go up in price or sell out. Purchase these regional tickets in Ventimiglia on your day of travel. The regional train from Milano Centrale to Como S Giovanni is 4.55 euros and to Varenna-Esino is 6.45 euros.

When buying tickets on www.trenitalia.com and switching to English with British flag you do not need to register in the customer area and set up a password unless you want Trenitalia to keep a record of your purchase with the all important ticket number which number is all you need to make your trip but I always print it at the end of my purchase. If you do not want to register as a customer and set up a password just check the box "Non Sono Registrato" below the blanks where you fill in your name and e-mail. After you put in your e-mail you can leave all the other boxes blank and go straight to the Non Sono Registrato box. They only need the name of one passenger and their e-mail address, but it doesn't hurt to go ahead and put the names of others traveling with you. We are traveling from Nice to Milan in August and will be doing day trips from Milan to the Italian lakes.

If you are going from Ventimiglia to Como S. Giovanni rather than to Varenna, it can sometimes be advisable to book the whole journey in advance. This is because some of the trains advised from Milan to Como are not Regional trains with no reserved seats, but are fast Eurocity trains to Switzerland with advance reductions and reserved seats that can sell out. At the times these Eurocity train are used, there are sometimes no direct Regional trains from Milano Centrale to Como, and to take an onward Regional train you might have to proceed by Metro to Milano Porta Garibaldi for one of the more regular trains from there.
