Stamping rail tickets

We will be traveling by train in Spain, France and England this September. I've managed to navigate the various websites and have all our tickets in hand. But I'm confused as to which tickets need to be stamped before boarding. We've used rail passes in our previous trips so this is a new issue for us.

Thanks for any help.

1. Re: Stamping rail tickets

Tickets that show they are for a specific train on a specific date (say August 5 at 8:30 a.m.) do not need to be stamped because there is no possibility of their being reused since they will not be valid on any other train.

Tickets bought in a machine, unstamped, that could be used today or next year do need to be validated. You could have found the ticket lying on the ground, already used and thrown away by its previous owner (or have been given it by a friend who had already used it), and be fraudulently using it again.

In the UK - none

In France - most tickets, other than print at home

In Spain - none

In Italy - regional tickets, not long distance ones with reservations, nor self-print ones

Fantastic, thank you both for your replies. All of our tickets are print at home for specific trains, so looks like we don't have to worry about the stamping. I kept reading that you have to be sure to have your tickets "composted" in France and wasn't sure about the other countries, so this clears it up.

Many thanks again.

The print at home tickets wouldn't fit in the French composting machine in any case. If you do happen to have to buy a ticket in France, it will usually say in big letters at the top 'BIllet á Composter...'

Whilst that's possible in the UK it's unusual - few lines offer the facility. Double check that what you have got are tickets and not just booking confirmations

Yes, dzug1, you're correct. We do have actual tickets on East Coast to York, but we will have to collect tickets at a machine for Bletchley Park with our confirmation number. Apparently still no stamping required.

British train tickets do not have to be stamped.

If the ticket is not a reservation for a specific train, your ticket is open and can be used on any train within the validity of that ticket. DO read the small print!

Bletchley Park is not a railway station but I can guess where you going! Enjoy that.
