Amtrak California Zephyr

Hi All,

We are planning our trip on the California Zephyr (it soooo exciting) next year and have noticed that the fare nearly doubles when splitting the trip with a stop at Glenwood Springs. we really want to split the trip with a few days in the Rockies.

Am I doing something wrong or is this correct, seems odd when it stops there anyway.

Thanks in advance for you help and advice..

A good place to track fares for different dates/places is http://biketrain.net/amsnag/amSnag.php

Have fun!

Are you reserving sleeping accommodations too? As those fill up the price can go way up. Try the day before or after when you're leaving Glenwood, and see what you get, sometimes that can make a big difference in price.

As with airline fares, breaking up a trip can change the fare structure. The fact that "it stops there anyway" may not carry weight in this situation any more than it would with airfares (it can cost more to travel to an intermediary point than to a flight's final destination, and certainly cost more if you break up the flight with a stopovere). Plus, as you likely know, Amtrak fares can vary widely by what day of the week you're traveling on for each leg.

You could call Amtrak and ask if there are any other ways you could stop at Glenwood, or elsewhere, without having such a big increase on the fare. An Amtrak pass can help if you want stopovers, but I don't know if it'd pay off with just this one trip.

Flyertalk.com has a discussion board on Amtrak travel (under the Miles & Points), and they might have regular Amtrak travelers who could offer suggestions.

Unfortunately chazsndave from chezandave doesn't allow us to give you pertinent information. Are you in the USA or UK or Australia? This is an international forum and visitors from outside the USA do not have the same tools available to them that citizens do.

Don't use the website Call 1-800-usarail and when the automatron "Julie" comes on say Agent it may take three repeats of the word for the automenu to give in. Talk to an Amtrak agent.

And please update your personal info so we can offer you better advice.

sorry we are from the uk, had an issue with my profile thingy.

this is not the only trip we are planning on our travels in the USA, we are over for a month and will be doing a couple of other trips, still in the planning stage as the moment. we have looked at the rail pass. I know when we did a stop over on route to Australia it did not cost us any extra and often in the uk it can be cheaper to split the train trip.

Amtrak uses a yield management system a lot of like to call "buckets" and fares move into higher buckets as they are sold. Glenwood Springs is a popular destination, and the inventory to Glenwood Springs probably moved into a higher "bucket" than going straight through.

You aren't going to get any better price on the website than you got. You'll have to speak to an agent, as shallow shoals suggested, to try to improve on it.

Thanks all, have worked out the cost with all our travel and it works out cheaper than the rail pass (for all the rail travel from east to west). We are going to travel coach class as it makes it loads cheaper and don't find sleeping in seats a problem (plenty of 3rd class night trains in India helps).

you have all been helpful and no doubt I will have a million more questions as we plan further.
