Train Rail booking for Dec

Hi,

My wife and myself are planning for a short holiday in Italy during this coming Dec period. I've checked with multiple travel agent in my home country on the rail booking between Milan and Venice during the period of last week of Dec 2013 was told the time-table is not out and not available for my booking.,

However when I checked online via "http://www.raileurope.com.sg/" and "http://www.trenitalia.com/. Both website indicate the booking for the period of my travel are now available for booking.

I would like to know whether it's safe to book and reserve my rail travel on both website and which one provide reservation on seats? As my wife will be doing quite some shopping, is there any special location to store our large luggage in the train?

Thanks in advance for those that response.

You should use the operator's own site, as there are no fees and you can select specific seats. www.trenitalia.com

If booking appears, then it's live, assuming of course you're seeing ALL the trains you expect to see.

In other words, if it's open you'd expect to see an hourly train Milan-Venice, if all you see all day is two trains at 01:23 and 15:27 for example, then it isn't really open.

But having checked, yes it does appear to be open.

Your booking will include a reserved seat.

with regards to luggage space, there is a section to put luggage at the end of each carriage. There is also a luggage rack above your seat, which you must use only if the size and weight is such that you can manhandle the luggage yourself. This is generally true for all European trains, beware that you must handle the luggage in going up the carriage also, so anything larger than 68cm type luggage is going to be a problem.

On some trains, you may find that smaller luggage will also fit in between the seats (for those seats which are back to back)

This route is served by 'Frecciabianca' trains, an official video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4R--qK6oqh8

try to do most of the shopping at your final destination so you won't be burdened too much on the train. Surprisingly, the Milan - Venice Frecciabianca for December is open for booking! There's no need for travel agents for train travel in Europe. Just buy from the operator's website.

If you use a travel agent, Rail Europe or other resellers you will pay vastly more than you should. Do not use.

Italian Railways are usually one of the last to upload their new timetable, so if it looks a bit sparse, as above, then wait for a bit. If you can't buy tickets then nobody can.
