Go to the Italian railway website www.trenitalia.it which is available in English.

Seat reservations are required on almost all long distance trains in Italy and if you book up now you can do some journeys really cheaply.

However most of the trains from Roma to Montepulciano (you change at Chiusi) will be regional trains which don't have reservations. If you come back from Siena the slow way, the same will apply.

Check the times carefully as I spotted one that needs an hour and 20 minutes wait at Chiusi before making the last 11 minutes to Montepulciano!

Montepulciano train station is 10 km away from Montepulciano with almost no buses at all and no waiting taxis.

Simply go to Chiusi - that's Chiusi-Cianciano train station - from where there are buses (except on Sundays) and it is easier to get a taxi. Most people staying in Montepulciano prefer to rent a car as public transport there is far from ideal - there are major rental companies located close to Chiusi train station.

For train times see www.trenitalia.com clicking the UK flag for English and entering your 'hour' of departure e.g. enter '13' for 13.00. About half the trains from Roma Termini to Chiusi are Regional trains with no advance reductions and no reserved seats - to see the price of these use a date this week, and buy tickets for them in Italy.

From Siena to Roma Termini, the website gives you a choice of connections via Chiusi or via Florence. If you wish to buy in advance without registration, buy only the trains with reserved seats (Frecce/Intercity) booking them separately by clicking 'non sono registrato' before purchase, and buy the Regional connections in Italy.
